Dr.
Matthew Schwartz is the NSF-AIRE fellow in the Department of Geology for
the 2001-02 academic year. Matt obtained his Ph.D. in Oceanography from the
University of Delaware; his dissertation research involved using natural radioisotope
tracers to investigate submarine groundwater discharge into the Delaware Bay.
During his one-year appointment, Dr. Schwartz will be involved with curriculum
development, teaching, and educational outreach activities.
Courses being developed by Dr. Schwartz include Natural Hazards (GE197j) and
Oceanography (GE 171), which he will teach in the January and Spring terms,
respectively. He is also working in conjunction with Dr. Jennifer Shosa to develop
a series of laboratories to be incorporated into the Environmental Geology course
(GE131). This summer, he will work with Dr. Robert Gastaldo to develop Earths
Past Climates, a new introductory-level paleoenvironments course.
Matt will also be assisting with the organization of a January 2002 assessment
methods workshop and the spring Colby Celebration of Scholarship, including
the Colby Undergraduate Research Symposium. He plans to attend one national
meeting to discuss research and curriculum development activities.
