Civil Rights in China: Who is Liu Xiaobo?
Tray Dinner
5:00 - 6:30 pm
Location to be announced
Liu Xiaobo, who has spent much of his adult life in a Chinese prison,
recently was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to promote
greater human rights and political freedom in China. The Nobel
Committee's decision was praised in places like Washington DC and
London, but it was bitterly criticized by government officials in
Beijing. Who is Liu Xiaobo? Why has he become such a hero in the West,
and such a villain in much of China? And what does the controversy tell
us about the politics of human rights today? This panel and discussion will try to answer these questions.
