Students of Chinese are strongly encouraged to spend a semester or a year in China pursuing intensive language study. They may choose from among the following Colby-approved programs:
Colby belongs to the Associated Kyoto Program (AKP) which is a consortium of sixteen small American colleges (Amherst, Bates, Bowdoin, Bucknell, Carleton, Colby, Connecticut College, Middlebury, Mount Holyoke, Oberlin, Pomona, Smith, Wellesley, Wesleyan, Whitman, and Williams).
Students spend the nine month academic year at Doshisha University in the ancient capital of Kyoto, Japan. The program carries credit equivalent to the usual year in Colby. One half of the student's academic time is spent in intensive language study at a level appropriate to the student's previous language training and aptitude. The second half of the curriculum involves elective courses in art, literature, economics, history, politics, religion, and other subjects most of which are taught by faculty members from the consortium institutions. Also, non-credit courses are available in cooking, flower arrangement, calligraphy, music, and other cultural subjects of interest. Students live in Japanese homes as a member of the family. Kyoto has an exceptionally rich cultural life from which students benefit.
More information is available from the East Asian Studies Department. Visit the AKP Web Page at http://www.associatedkyotoprogram.org
Colby is affiliated with Kansai Gaidai which is located in Osaka, Japan. Most Colby students who wish to study in Japan for a semester take part in this program, although Kansai Gaidai offers a year program as well. The program carries credit equivalent to the usual semester (or year) in Colby.
A rigorous Japanese language program along with courses in Asian Studies (conducted in English) are offered in the setting of a modern university that specializes in international studies. Students have the option of living with a family or in a dormitory.
