Shelburne Farms
Shelburne, VT
Summer 2005
This past summer I interned at Shelburne Farms in Shelburne,
Vermont. Shelburne Farms is a 1400 acre working farm and non-profit
environmental education center. It was an amazing experience to work
as peers with many experienced educators, and to reap the benefits of
sharing positive environmental experiences with children.
Each week the camp would have a different theme. For the first few
weeks, we made Treasure Maps as a form of place based learning. After
observing for a week, I was able to lead my own group. I loved
educating the children as they were in tune with the surroundings. I
learned to seize "teachable moments," when the kids were enchanted by
bird calls or amazed by all the ants under a rock. It was incredibly
fulfilling to witness how much the kids took to heart and connected
with the area they inhabited.
We
worked a lot with the farm and barnyard animals. I focused my
teachings on connecting with where our food comes from. It was a
learning experience to plan out what lessons I wanted the kids to take
home with them. This required repetition and fun activities. I have a
newfound respect for the creativity and intelligence that produces
engaging education.
One of the most important lessons I received this summer was from my
coworkers. They lead by example every day. I observed their successes
with maintaining the kids' interest and handling behavioral problems.
I also cherished being part of such a positive work environment, and
will value that sense of community when I interview for jobs in the
future. Alternative education is emerging as a path for me in the
future. I am thankful for the Mellon's assistance because I would not
have been able to partake in this amazing experience otherwise.
