Sustainable Harvest International in Belize
Summer 2004
This summer I spent one month with fellow environmental policy major, Cait
Cleaver, working with the NGO Sustainable Harvest International in Punta Gorda,
Belize. I took part in the hiring process for an agroforestry extensionist.
I also wrote a grant proposal and helped to create a framework for future interns
to follow. The main project Cait and I tackled was writing a farmer's manual
that will be distributed to 14 of the surrounding villages. It explains how
to plant, cultivate and harvest over 50 crops. All of these crops will be grown
organically and will enrich the diets of the villagers. We traveled to the village
of San Jose to help install a biogas system, using diesel exhaust and pig manure,
to provide cooking gas for a family home.
