My internship at the OEC was very valuable and interesting, and I'd highly
reccommend it to other students who are interested in environmental
internships. The OEC is a non-profit organization that has many members, and
works with lobbying the Ohio state legislature. They work with the media,
legislators, and other NGOs in Ohio such as hunting groups, the Audubon
society, and interested citizens to achieve environmental change. They have
specialists in areas such as water (who work to help protect the great lakes),
lawyers who they consult with to help them propose legislatures, and lobbyists.
I worked with Jack Shaner, the lobbyist for the OEC. I helped write testimony
for him to present in front of legislative committees, helped research ideas
for new legislation, and researched how other states address environmental
issues in order to suggest similar change in Ohio. It was quite interesting
work, and interns who work there will always be busy with lots of diverse
things to do.
