FR 127 in Dijon, France, will give students the opportunity to learn French while living in the beautiful city of Dijon. Through a combination of classes, outings, and a homestay, students will improve their language skills while learning about French life and the culture of Burgundy. Like FR127 offered on campus, this janplan will satisfy Colby’s language requirement.

The janplan director has extensive experience directing programs abroad, including the Colby in Dijon program, most recently in 2003 and 2005. He is in Dijon this fall, with a group of 21 Colby students.

Fee
Cost of Janplan (based on enrollment of 15 students): $1243
Cost of airfare to and from Boston: $619 (subject to change)

Total fee: $1862 (subject to change)

Please note the following:

  • This is a zero sum budget. Should there be substantial money left in the account after the janplan is over, this money will be refunded in equal parts to participating students.
  • This fee covers room and board with a host family (two meals per day except three meals per day on weekends), one overnight excursion (including meals), one day excursion (lunch not included), all museum and monument entrée fees, and a farewell dinner in a Dijon restaurant. The fee specifically does not cover: books and supplies, noon meals during weekdays, bus fares, taxi fares, and any personal travel. The amount you may spend in addition to the janplan fee will vary, depending on where you eat lunch, how much travel you do, etc.

January Program Schedule

January 2, 2005: Departure from Boston
January 3: Arrival in Paris; coach from Paris to Dijon. First night with host family.
January 4: Class begins
January 10: Day excursion to Beaune
January 13-14: Overnight excursion to northern Burgundy (Fontenay, Vézelay)
January 19-21: January Break
January 26: Final exam
January 27: Farewell dinner
January 28: Return to Boston

During most of the week, class will be held in the Colby apartment, located in an 18th century townhouse in the center of Dijon. Classes will be held in the morning and afternoon, except for Wednesdays, when there will be class in the afternoon only. There will be a total of four hours of class (two hours on Wednesday) per day. Work will include language work (with emphasis on speaking French), reading, and a French feature film.

There will be one daytime excursion to the city of Beaune, where we will visit the Hospices, a 15th-century hospital that has served almost interrupted to the present time. An overnight excursion to northern Burgundy will take us to some of the most renowned sites in France: the town of Vézelay with its 12-century basilica, one of the most beautiful examples of Romanesque art; the Abby of Fontenay, the oldest Cistercian monastery in Europe; the village of Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, which served as the décor of the movie “Le Chocolat.” We will stay the night in a hotel in the beautiful city of Auxerre and take all our meals together in typical Burgundian restaurants. A professor of history, who has taught many Colby in Dijon students, will guide us on this excursion.

Despite the very substantial cultural program included in this janplan, there will be ample time for relaxation and getting to know Dijon on your own.

Break and personal travel
Included in the janplan schedule is a three-day weekend break from January 19-21. Students have the choice of staying in Dijon with their host family or traveling in France or to nearby European countries. Travel to Paris and London is quick and relatively inexpensive on high-speed (TGV) trains. Travel to ski stations in the Alps (in particular Chamonix-Mont Blanc) is easy on an overnight train from Dijon, and the cost of ski or board rental, lodging and lift tickets in France is considerably less than in the US.

Aside from this long weekend, there is no time for personal travel. There will be no excused absences for travel, and there will be serious consequences, including lower grades and loss of credit, for students who abuse this policy.

Housing, meals, and activities
All students will be housed with French families, selected from among those that have already taken Colby students in the past. Some families live near the center of town and others live farther out in the suburbs. Students will normally take their breakfast (continental type) and evening meals with their host families; the noon meal may be taken in a student cafeteria in the center of town or in numerous other places. The homestay is an essential part of the program and students are expected to converse (in French, of course) with their host families at mealtime.

It may not be possible to accommodate all diets in Dijon, especially vegetarian diets that do not include milk products or eggs. If you have any dietary restrictions please contact Professor Weiss to see how you can be accommodated.

Dijon has a very rich cultural life, including theater, opera, concerts of every variety, nightclubs, cinema, and more. Students are encouraged to take advantage of these activities, which usually cost somewhat less than similar events in the US.
