Honors Thesis Information

For Admission into the Honors Program:
  1. Senior standing.
  2.  A GPA in the major of at least 3.25.
  3. A completed application form and supporting statement.
  4. Approval of the Department.
For Continuation from 493f to 494s:
Satisfactory completion of at least one chapter by the end of the Fall Semester, and formal approval of the tutor and second reader are a prerequisite for continuing an Honors Project in  the Spring Semester.

For Completion:
  1. Successful completion of the two honors courses, PL483 and PL484.
  2. Presentation of a substantial written thesis (approximately 50-75 pages, as a guideline), approved by the two readers, and awarded a grade of at least A- by the tutor in consultation with the reader.
  3. A public presentation of the results of the study.
(Special features of a particular project may necessitate other requirements, which can be worked out between the mentors and the student, and approved by the Department.)

For Receiving Honors in Philosophy:
  1. Successful completion of the Honors Program.
  2. A GPA of at least 3.25 in the major.
  3. Approval of the Department Faculty.
Dates and Deadlines:
  1. Application deadline: The end of April of the Junior Year. [Under special circumstances (e.g., junior year abroad), applications may be considered as late as the Drop-Add period of the first semester of the senior year.]
  2. October 1 of the Senior Year: A detailed written calendar of steps toward the completion of the project to be agreed upon by the mentor and student.
  3. Last day of Final Exams of the first semester of the Senior Year: A detailed tentative outline or prospectus of the project, or sufficient draft text (e.g., a chapter). On the basis of this, approval will be granted or withheld for continuing the Honors project.
  4. April 1 of Senior Year: A completed first draft of thesis.
  5. May 1: Final Copy of the thesis.
  6. No later than the last day of scheduled events: The oral presentation.
All dates are firm. Any changes require the approval of the entire Department.
