Student Profiles

Sally Drescher:

Sally DrescherSally Drescher ('09) is from rural New Hampshire.  She is a member of the Colby Women's Crew team and serves as a Head Resident on Hall Staff. She is also involved with student theater, Pottery Club, and the Student Alumni Association.  After spending two summers doing data entry and filing at the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, Sally spent last summer working on campus at Alumni Relations and organized events like Alumni College and had the opportunity to interact with Colby alumni.  Although her strengths lie in humanities, Sally has a great appreciation for the sciences, and Science, Technology, and Society allows her to explore both areas. She also is a History major. After Colby, Sally is considering entering the education field to teach and coach crew or continuing with event planning. Top

Madeline Given (Maddie):

Maddy GivenMaddie ('08) has been an STS major since the spring of her freshman year. She would like to be either an orthopedic doctor or a physical therapist. Maddie joined STS with the hopes of gaining insight into medical ethics and bridging the gap between scienfic medicine and the greater community. Her chief interest in sports and sports medicine started at an early age. Maddie has been an avid swimmer since the age of 4 and has received Honorable Mention All-America Honors from swimming at Colby. As an STS major, she hopes to use the past in pursuit of making a better present and future in the medical field. Her senior research is on "The Ironic History of Medical Radiation: From Cancer Causing to Cancer Treatment." Top

Kimberly Rudolph (Kim):

Kim Rudolph Kim Rudolph (’08) is from central Connecticut. She started out as a Physics major at Colby, but then she discovered that she liked thinking about science far more than doing it. So, she became an STS major to satisfy her overarching interest in cutting-edge science and its implications. She hopes to tie her STS major and her Japanese minor together when she goes abroad next spring to Japan and studies various STS issues in a Japanese context. Kim loves all things Japanese, from food to music to anime. At Colby, she is the president of the Anime Club as well as the Taiko (Japanese drumming) Club. Non-Japanese-related activities include debating philosophy in the Freethinker’s Club and singing in the Chorale and Collegium music groups. When not in class or clubs, Kim can usually be found in the SCS office where she fixes computers in her campus job as the student supervisor. She loves computers, and is not afraid to admit that she is one uber-l337 geek. She wants to study the future of computer technology as part of her STS major. Kim is very satisfied with the STS major because it allows her to incorporate her many interests into one program of study. Top.

Thomas Reznick (Tom):

Tom ReznickTom Reznick ('07) is from Chappaqua, NY. Tom enjoys singing, reading, writing, camping, skiing, road-biking, and homebrewing. Tom is a member of Colby Emergency Response and has been active in many political organizations. He is currently researching the social impacts of late 19th century scientific and technological changes to the Maine potato industry in Aroostook County as a Senior Scholars thesis. Additionally, Tom is also examining the moral economy of 20th century agriculture and the values engendered by modern agricultural technology for his senior seminar class. He is an STS major and a chemistry minor. Top

Thomas Testo (Tom):

Tom TestoTom Testo (’07) is an STS major from Troy, NY. When Tom isn’t entranced by his STS studies, his hobbies include auto maintenance, snowboarding, guitar, and student government. Tom also has a passion for motorsports, and is an avid Formula One fan. Tom loves the interdisciplinary nature of the STS program, and is grateful for the opportunity to research the political and economic influence of Grand Prix racing in Europe in ST485. Top

Aaron Bradford:

Aaron BradfordAaron ('07) is a Chemistry: Cell/Molecular/Biochem Concentration Major, but has definitely enjoyed his minor in STS. Aaron firmly believes that STS will help him in his goals of being a researcher. He has enjoyed classes such as like Biomedical and Environmental Ethics, as well as being able to pursue research interests like the political nature of video games in today's society. Aaron has been on Colby Woodsmen, Colby Emergency Response and most days he can be found in various science labs or backstage at Runnals theater. In his spare time, Aaron enjoys relaxing in his apartment with his wife, their beagle and cat, a good book or a good video game. Aaron is currently bewildered by the US legislature's attempts to systematically dismantle the ESRB, the video game industry's self-regulating body. Top

Daniel Herrick (Danny):

Brian BachowDanny ('08) is from the San Fransisco Bay area of California. In his spare time Danny enjoys surfing and the great outdoors. He is a Chemistry Major, with interests in organic chemistry research, and an STS Minor. Danny wants to enter the medical field, and is interested in using his STS experiences to broaden his knowledge of the relationships between research, medical ethics, and society. Top

James Westhafer
Brian BachowJames ('10) is an STS/History double major from Malvern, Pennsylvania.  A clear and often important link between the two subjects is cited as his reason for choosing these two areas of study.  He is a member of the Colby Men's Soccer Team and also enjoys playing sports like basketball and football in the off-season.  The fields of academia and meteorology interest James as he continues the often difficult search for his desired career choice.  He will be continuing his studies abroad next spring in Denmark at the historical University of Copenhagen.
