Paula Harrington came to Colby as a Visiting Assistant Professor of English in 2008-2009, designing and teaching her English 115 course as “Memory & Memoir.” She has also taught writing, literature, and American Studies at Marymount College of Fordham University, the University of New England, and the University of California, Davis. At Marymount, Fordham, she served as Director of Composition and Director of the Writing Center. She has substantial experience working with ELL and ESL students there and at UC Davis, where she earned her Ph.D. in English with a specialization in American Literature and a practicum in American Studies. She holds her MA in English from San Francisco State University, and her B.A. in English and Writing from Columbia University, School of General Studies, where she graduated magna cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. At UC Davis, she was named an Outstanding Graduate Instructor for her work teaching composition; at SF State, she was a Distinguished Graduate Student. Before returning to academia, she was a newspaper reporter and columnist in the San Francisco Bay Area, writing for daily papers including the San Francisco Examiner,San Mateo Times, Hayward Daily Review, and West County Times. She is the author of Looking Ahead, a history of Guide Dogs for the Blind, and an active scholar in the fields of Mark Twain studies and animal studies. Her article, “No Mongrels Need Apply,” will be forthcoming in the Minnesota review. In addition to teaching composition and directing the Farnham Writers’ Center at Colby this year, she will teach a major authors course on Twain in the spring. |
 After three years as a tutor and one as Assistant Director, Laura will be returning again this year. She looks forward to continuing to work with the students and tutors who infuse the tiny office under the library with energy and passion. |
After emerging from 11 weeks in a Northern California redwood forest and a 5-month Balkan adventure, Jess will return for a triumphant spring semester. She has a tendency to name fish and houseplants after famous sociologists.
