An internship is a monitored work experience in which a student has intentional learning goals and reflects on what she or he is learning throughout the experience. An internship most frequently takes place at an off-campus job site and is monitored by an on-site work supervisor. It is designed to broaden a student’s awareness of a career field and specific jobs within that field.
In the past, Colby offered students academic credit for internships that they conducted throughout the year. As recommended by the Academic Affairs Committee, the faculty has approved a policy that no longer allows students to receive academic credit, but rather to receive transcript notation for their internship experiences. Please keep in mind that students can earn Jan Plan Credit for internships
conducted during the January term.
In order for a student to receive transcript notation of his/her internship, he/she needs to complete an internship application through the Career Center. The application requires a student to identify a Faculty Sponsor along with providing information about his/her proposed internship site, internship duties, and final internship product.
To receive full notation of this experience, a student needs to hand in his/her final project(s) to the Faculty Sponsor no later than one week after internship completion. The student also must have a letter of evaluation sent directly to the Faculty Sponsor from his/her internship site supervisor; this letter must confirm the total number of hours worked on internship duties (approximate number of hours worked per week over a specified number of weeks).
For more information on doing an internship for Jan Plan Credit or Transcript Notation, please visit the Career Center.
For those students planning to do a January or summer internship/independent study outside of the United States, please review the important information on the Doing An Internship Abroad page before finalizing your plans.
