CCAK Lecture Series

The 2009 CCAK Lecture Series is now over. For those who missed it, this year's events included:

Waterville's Social, Economic and Neighborhood Issues -Alan Main, SRO, Waterville Police Dept.    Learn through a virtual tour of Waterville the neighborhood and social issues that place many mentees at-risk.  Particularly helpful for those new to the Waterville Area and mentoring. Andrea Pasco, KVCAP- Has your mentee ever told you that he really likes a certain girl, or that your 4th grade mentee has just "broken up" with her boyfriend? Andrea will address issues about puberty, dating, crushes, and sexuality and what you can say and do to help your mentee.

Adam Howard - Educ Dept. Colby - Learn about the impact that growing up in poverty has on a child.  This lecture will also examine social class differences and microaggressions.

Hannah Osborne -Lawrence Junior HIgh- Many mentees struggle with worries about the significant use of alcohol in their families.  Statistically this also places them at a high risk of their own early use.  The lecture will be extremely helpful with information for you to help your mentee.

Donna Richardson-Wtvl. Public Schools - The focus of this lecture will be on a variety of academic issues - how to connect with teacher, how to help reluctant learners and readers and what to do to avoid issues around homework help.

Karry Chlosey - Mercy Hospital - Eating disorder are alarming rising in very young boys and girls. Has your mentee mentioned skipping breakfast, thinking they are too heavy, or trying to make a weight for a sport? This lecture will focus on helping mentees develop a healthy body image and what behaviors might be of concern.

Jackie Dupont - Hardy Girls/Healthy Women - Many mentees struggle with friendship issues - from on and off again friendships to never fitting in.  Jackie will discuss the impact that girls friendships, fighting, and bullying have on your mentees and what strategies you can help to have them find their voice.
