Best Buddies, Colby College Chapter

Colby's Best Buddies is part of an incorporated, national, non-profit organization established in 1989. Best Buddies provides an opportunity for Colby students and mentally challenged persons in the Waterville community to become friends. Activities include meeting with a matched buddy twice a month, attending group outings (4 per year), and club meetings. The program is a mutually rewarding way to impact someone's life.

Evening Sandwich Program

The Evening Sandwich Program, organized at the Universalist Unitarian Church in Waterville, provides meals to members of the Waterville community in their times of hardship. Volunteers help prepare and serve meals, distribute beverages, wash dishes, and offer assistance in the overall running of these beneficial programs.   This program served nearly 20,000 guests last year on a “no questions asked” basis.

Head Start

Head Start is a national pre-school development program that aims to improve the general quality of life of impoverished children by offering educational and nutritional assistance. Volunteers will be working with children 3-5 years of age in activities such as reading, outdoor events, puzzles, and games. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own interest and skills in organizing events. Taxi vouchers available if transportation is needed.

Mid Maine Homeless Shelter

The Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter is an interfaith shelter located at 28 Ticonic St. (behind Railroad Square) in Waterville. The shelter has around 20 beds and serves as a temporary home for men, women and families. There are three volunteer shifts available:
7-8am: Help make and serve breakfast, and socialize with the guests.
5-6pm: Help make dinner, sort donations, and clean the shelter before guests arrive.
6-7pm: Help serve and clean up dinner, and socialize with the guests.

Volunteers can go alone or with a friend for one hour (or more) per week. Taxi vouchers are available if needed.

Maine General Medical Center

Volunteers work in various departments of the hospital.

Junior High Tutoring
Waterville Junior High School

The Junior High Tutoring Program offers Colby students the opportunity to work one on one with Waterville Junior High School students. Volunteers meet with the same student each week, and subject matter ranges from social studies to English and math. Volunteers should be prepared to tutor in all subjects.

Students can volunteer once or twice a week, usually between 11:10 and 12 or 2:15 and 3. Other times can be arranged if necessary.

Paw Pals
@ The Waterville Humane Society

Paw Pals is the Colby branch of the Waterville Humane Society's volunteer program. Students go to the Humane Society once a week and play with the animals for about an hour. This interaction helps socialize the animals, thereby making them more adoptable. Paw Pals also organizes campus events to promote animal welfare. Volunteers must attend an orientation meeting held by the Humane Society and sign a volunteer contract.

Project Team

Colby students in Project Team organize team-building activities for local elementary schools students.

Students volunteering at this local assisted living home will enjoy lunch or dinner with a group of elderly women who come together for meals each day.
