2004 Lovejoy Award Citation for Studs Terkel

October 10, 2004

Studs Terkel, Chicago icon, writer, raconteur, sage, and activist, you are, first and foremost, a consummate listener. In the voices of ordinary individuals you reveal the extraordinary and show us beauty, pathos, and dignity in everyday life. Your work, driven by a passion for fairness and justice, reminds us that the dispossessed, at least as much as the high and mighty, deserve our respect and often our gratitude. Your principles—standing up for your beliefs and refusing to be bullied into signing loyalty statements—cost you your job and your soapbox. But, despite being blacklisted, your perseverance and integrity and the power of your truth was rewarded with ever-higher stations, ever-larger audiences, ever-deeper impact. Your courage—to question authority and to put the common good above self—exemplifies values for which we revere Elijah Parish Lovejoy. Colby is proud to add your name to the list of distinguished journalists who have, in word and in action, perpetuated the ideals for which we honor Lovejoy.
