Honorary Degree Citation for Lovejoy Fellow John S. Knight

Emanating from his home in Akron, the influence of John S. Knight in the world of journalism is pervasive and far-flung. Editorial Chairman of the Knight Newspapers, an organization from which two members, Mr. C. A. McKnight and the late Mr. Edwin Lahey, already have won the Lovejoy Award. He directs publishing enterprises in Ohio, Michigan, North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, and within the past few days has acquired the major newspapers of Philadelphia. His eminence in his profession has been recognized by numerous awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for his own editorials, a number of Pulitzer Prizes for newspapers in his organization, and the John Peter Unger Award. Twice President of the American Society of Newspaper Editors, former President of the Inter-American Press Association, he has served on the Board of Directors of the Associated Press and is a Fellow of Sigma Delta Chi, the newspaper fraternity whose Now England Chapter established its Academy with headquarters at Colby College. His credo is that a newspaper "is at all times a defender and protector of the rights and liberties of our people," and that it "does not yield to the pressures of merchant or banker, politician or labor union." His courage and integrity in pursuing relentlessly these principles have brought him to our platform as eighteenth Lovejoy Fellow.

By the authority of the Board of Trustees of Colby College, I confer upon you, JOHN SHIVELY KNIGHT, the degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa. The hood with which you have been invested and this diploma which I place in your hand are the visible symbols of your membership in this society of scholars, to all the rights and privileges of which I declare you entitled.
