RALPH MCGILL: courageous publisher of the Atlanta Constitution, for eighteen years its editor and for nearly thirty-two years a member of its staff; your columns and articles have won admirers throughout the United States and in other lands; your objective reporting of conditions abroad has exemplified the highest traditions of your profession; your historic trip at the height of the Second World War, as one of three representatives of the American Society of Newspaper Editors, a trip that carried you to Moscow and Chungking, is dramatic evidence of the commitment of yourself and your colleagues to the elusive but essential goal of world understanding through freedom of information. A true philosopher, you have the ability to see both sides of controversial questions; and yet you have been a vigorous crusader against forces antithetical to our democratic way of life. Recipient of a nmber of significant awards, author of several books, distinguished public servant: Colby is proud to salute you and to welcome you, a neighbor from the South, with our warmest Northern hospitality. You honor Colby College in accepting membership in our society of scholars, to which we are proud to admit you.

By the authority of the Board of Trustees of Colby College I confer upon you, RALPH McGILL, the Degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa. The hood with which you have been invested and this diploma which I place in your hand are the visible symbols of your membership in this society of scholars, to all the rights and privileges of which I declare you entitled.
