Honorary Degree Citation for Lovejoy Fellow Roger Tatarian

Conferred November 10, 1980
Articulate and successful advocate for a free and responsible press, you have achieved a brilliant career in a demanding profession. During thirty-four years with the United Press International, first as a reporter and later as Vice President and Editor-in-Chief, you brought to that organization its widely respected credibility. In the finest traditions of reporting and dissemination of news, you have worked tirelessly at home and abroad to promote and preserve the people's right to know through a responsible competitive wire service and through UNESCO debates resisting government control of information. Consistently in your professional life you have recognized the dominant importance of the individual in our society and as a skillful teacher have set superb examples for young people and for your contemporaries. Since 1972 you have been professor of journalism at California State University in Fresno, your alma mater, where the California Newspaper Publishers Association designated you in 1979 Outstanding Journalism Educator. For fidelity to your calling, conspicuous courage and singular journalistic performance, Colby is proud to salute you as the twenty-eighth Lovejoy Fellow.

By the authority of the Board of Trustees of Colby College I confer upon you, ROGER TATARIAN, the degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa. The hood with which you have been invested and this diploma which I place in your hand are the visible symbols of your membership in this society of scholars, and to all the rights and privileges of which I declare you entitled.
