JAMES RUSSELL WIGGINS, editor and author, formerly with the Air Force Intelligence, also formerly with the St. Paul Pioneer Press and on the staff of the New York Times, member of the Managing Editors Association of the Associated Press, student of the life and work of Jefferson, expert on English common law, composer of light verse. As managing editor of the Washington Post famous for its courage and its passion for the truth and as chairman of the Committee on Freedom of Information of the American Society of Newspaper Editors, you have become known for your stalwart opposition to the attempts of investigating committees to intimidate witnesses and for your success in persuading our government to adopt a sane and reasonable system of security classification, Colby College honors your crusading zeal and names you its Elijah Parish Lovejoy Fellow for the year 1954.
