    Loan Provisions

Upon receipt of a Courtesy Card, a patron may borrow library materials, subject to the following loan provisions:

  • Alumni may have a maximum of six items checked out at any one time. All other courtesy patrons may have only one item at a time. Exceptions may be granted only by application to the Library Director or Assistant Director at the end of six months if legitimate need for loan of research materials is demonstrated and there is no history of accrued fines.

  • Loan periods vary with type of material. Books and government documents are loaned for 4 (four) weeks, Miller and Bixler periodicals are loaned for 1 (one) week; Science periodicals are loaned for 3 (three) days. One renewal is allowed. Reference works, video tapes, DVDs, Special Collections materials, maps, audio books, and sound recordings are available for library use only and do not circulate outside the library.

  • Overdue fines for books, documents, and periodicals accrue at the rate of $.25 per day per item until the date the item is returned or billed. Borrowing privileges will be suspended until all accrued fines are paid.

  • Materials that are recalled for use by Colby faculty, staff, or students must be returned within three days of notification. The penalty for late returns of recalled items is $1.00 per day per item.

  • Patrons are responsible for the replacement cost of lost items, plus a $25.00 processing fee per item. A minimum replacement cost of $50.00 plus the $25.00 processing fee is charged for out of print books.

  • Courtesy Card holders may only borrow materials from Miller Library, Bixler Art and Music Library, and the Science Library. Materials from Media Services, Computer Labs, Language Resource Center, Career Services, and the Writing Center do not circulate.

  • A courtesy card does not make one eligible to borrow materials from other libraries through Maine Info Net or Colby's Interlibrary Loan Service.

  • The computers in the library are for research use only with priority given to Colby users. Persons using computers for other activities will be asked to leave the library.

THE COLBY LIBRARIES RESERVE THE RIGHT TO REVOKE BORROWING PRIVILEGES FOR FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH ANY OF THESE PROVISIONS.
