Library Lab and Public Computers in the Libraries

All computers in the Libraries are for academic, instructional, research, administrative and public service purposes. Colby users (students, faculty, and staff) have priority access to the computers. Visitors are permitted to use the publicly accessible computers to access the Internet and library resources that are available on campus with the understanding that they may be requested to logoff if a Colby related person needs access. Minors using the network must be supervised by an adult.

Loaner Laptops


Policy

  • Computers circulate to current Colby College students, faculty, staff, and partners in good standing, only.
  • “In good standing” means that the presentation of a valid Colby College ID and that the borrower’s record is not blocked. 
  • Borrowers are expected to protect Loaner computers from damage and theft.
  • No food or drink should be in the vicinity of borrowed Loaner computers.
  • Borrowers are expected to allow time for staff to check in Loaner computers.
  • Computers are available on a first-come, first-served basis, only.  No holds, or advance reservations are permitted.
  • 4 Hour Loan periods.  No renewals.  No overnight lending.  Computers are due back one half hour before Miller Library closes.
  • One computer per borrower.
  • Files or software may not be saved or downloaded to a computer’s hard drive.  Files or software saved or downloaded to a computer’s hard drive will be deleted when the laptop is returned.  Burnable CD’s are available for purchase at the Circulation Desk to save your work.

Procedure

Checking Out
  • Computer’s can be checked out at the Circulation Desk during regular business hours.
Checking In
  • The circulation staff will record the return on the Laptop Circulation Log.
  • The circulation staff will do a visual check of the laptop to ensure that the following components are intact:
    • Computer
    • Battery
    • AC Adapter
  • The laptop will be returned to the locked cabinet.
    • The battery is recharged at that time.
    • It will have its’ hard drive re-imaged at that time.

Fines and Liabilities

  • Overdue fines are $1.00 per hour.  A portion of an hour counts as a full hour (e.g. 10 minutes = 60 minutes).
  • After 24 hours a replacement fee will be imposed.
  • Replacement of a lost, or stolen, computer is no less than $1500.
  • Damages to Loaner Laptops will incur the cost of replacement part(s) plus labor costs.
  • Borrowers will also be billed for the replacement cost of lost or stolen peripherals: case, power supply, cord, mouse pad, battery, and zip drive (if applicable).
  • Damages to peripherals will incur the cost of replacement part(s) plus labor costs.

Borrower Agreement

By Checking this computer out: 

  • I agree to assume full responsibility for any laptop computer issued through Miller Library for the time it is checked out to me. 
  • I agree to pay Colby College for the full cost if the laptop computer and or any peripheral charged out to me is lost or stolen. 
  • I also agree to pay the full repair cost charged by the -College’s contracted repair service if the computer and or any peripherals are damaged.
  • I agree to pay any fines assessed to my account for failure to abide by the Miller Library Loaner Laptop computer circulation policy
  • Laptops are for use in Miller Building only.
  • Borrowers are expected to protect Loaner Laptops from damage and theft.
  • No food or drink should be in the vicinity of borrowed Loaner Laptops.
  • Save your work often as out of battery error may lose data.

Printers

Colby students, faculty, and staff may use the Colby Library printers at no charge. Print charges for visitors are $.10 per page. Please track the number of pages and pay at the Circulation Desk.
