Videos/DVDs for Classroom Use

The Colby Libraries provide a collection of videos/DVDs that faculty may use for classroom instruction.  Librarians are available to assist faculty in identifying video material and procuring items for addition to the Colby media collection.   Media Resources staff train faculty in the use of classroom technology and are available for technical assistance.

Faculty retrieve video material either from the Colby Collections, request a loan through MaineCat, NExpress, or initiate a request for purchase. All materials are checked out at the appropriate Circulation or Reserve Desk.

Faculty are responsible for their own classroom projection.

What You Need to Know and Do

Videos in the Colby Libraries

 Place on Reserve

Faculty are strongly urged to place media on Reserve in advance of the show date in order to be assured the material will be available for presentation.  The Faculty member is responsible for the return of the video to the Reserves Desk after showing.

 Checkout from circulating collection

Faculty can check videos/DVDs out for showing using  their campus ID card and are encouraged to do so in advance of the show date.  The Faculty member is responsible for the return of the video to the Library after showing.

Videos that are in circulation are subject to immediate recall for classroom use.  Library staff will make every attempt to retrieve circulating items, but cannot be held responsible if an item is not returned on time.

Videos not in the Colby Libraries:

Purchase

Videos/DVDs are purchased for the library within the scope of the library’s collection policies.  Requests for purchase should me made at least eight weeks before the show date and can be made online via the Purchase Materials Request Form or through the faculty member’s library liaison.

Borrow through MaineCat or NExpress

Videos circulate for one week within Bates, Bowdoin, Northeastern, Wellesley, and Williams via MaineCat/NExpress. Faculty are responsible for requesting the material and should do so about a week in advance. Videos/DVDS are signed out at the Miller Circulation Desk.   Like Colby media loans to Bates, Bowdoin, Northeastern, Wellesley, and Williams, videos are subject to immediate recall for use by the home institution.

Rental or Preview

The Libraries and Media Resources do not facilitate rental or preview of videos or DVDs .

IF A FACULTY MEMBER IS NOT GOING TO BE IN ATTENDANCE

A Faculty member who is not going to be in attendance for a showing needs to make her/his own arrangements for video pickup and return to the Circulation Desk or library book drop.  Please remember that Circulation only checks out materials to the cardholder her/himself.  Media Resources does not provide pick up and return services.

TRAINING & EQUIPMENT, SCHEDULING, and TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE

Training & Equipment

Media Resources provides printed instructions for equipment in each classroom and will soon have this and other materials available on line.  Faculty unfamiliar with use of classroom equipment should make an appointment with Media Resources in advance of the showing for training.
