Orientation Schedule & COOT Trips

The COOT experience takes place within the larger context of the Class of 2015 Orientation. Check-in for the Class of 2015 Orientation takes place between 8:00am and noon on Tuesday, August 30th. You will interact with your COOT leaders as well as the entire orientation team comprised of faculty, staff, administrators, community members and a wide range of student leaders throughout the course of orientation. You will have an official pre-COOT trip meeting on Thursday, September 1st before embarking on your COOT trip which runs from Friday, September 2nd – Sunday, September 4th.

Equipment

Equipment needs will vary depending upon the trip chosen. Camping oriented trips require sleeping bags rated to 30 degrees and a sleeping pad while trips utilizing cabins may require a simple daypack or duffel bag and a general purpose sleeping bag.  Specific equipment lists will be mailed when you receive your trip confirmation letter.

Please note that the following trips require specialized gear:
  • Backpacking trips—internal or external frame backpack (4500+ cubic inches) and sturdy (preferably broken-in) hiking boots
  • Fishing/Canoeing—participants must provide spin casting set up including tackle, fly fishing gear will be made available but personal fly fishing gear can be used, if preferred
  • Rock Climbing—personal climbing shoes are not required but you are invited to bring your own pair if you have them. All other climbing gear will be provided.
  • Painting—bring your preferred art supplies packed for portability
  • Photography—participants must supply their own camera (digital or film). Camera and accessories must be packed in a bag well suited to travel and with protection from the elements.

Substance-Free Policy

COOT is a substance-free program that prohibits the use of drugs, alcohol or tobacco by all participants for the entire program, beginning with your arrival on campus and continuing through all COOT-related activities including reunions and other events during the academic year.

Cost

The fee for COOT is $275.00. This will be charged to your student account. Financial Aid is available. Please contact Student Financial Services for additional information.

Athletics

Participation in fall sports does not conflict with COOT. All new fall athletes attend COOT and all COOT-related activities.
