General Information

Orientation Schedule & COOT Trips

The COOT experience takes place within the larger context of the Class of 2017 Orientation. Check-in for the Class of 2017 Orientation takes place between 8:00am and noon on Tuesday, August 27th. You will interact with your COOT leaders as well as the entire orientation team comprised of faculty, staff, administrators, community members and a wide range of student leaders throughout the course of orientation. You will have an official pre-COOT trip meeting on Thursday, August 30th before embarking on your COOT trip which runs from Friday, 8/31 – Sunday, 9/2.

Equipment

Equipment needs will vary depending upon the trip chosen. Camping oriented trips require sleeping bags rated to 30 degrees and a sleeping pad while trips utilizing cabins may require a simple daypack or duffel bag and a general purpose sleeping bag.  Specific equipment lists will be mailed when you receive your trip confirmation letter.

Please note that the following trips require specialized gear:
  • Backpacking trips—internal or external frame backpack (4500+ cubic inches) and sturdy (preferably broken-in) hiking boots
  • Fishing/Canoeing—Spin casting set up including tackle is available for those registered for the Fishing COOT. Fly fishing gear is permitted, but not provided. Fishing licenses must be purchased by the participants.
  • Rock Climbing—personal climbing shoes are not required but you are invited to bring your own pair if you have them. All other climbing gear will be provided.
  • Painting—bring your preferred art supplies packed for portability
  • Photography—participants must supply their own camera (digital or film). Camera and accessories must be packed in a bag well suited to travel and with protection from the elements.
