The Office of Information Technology Services (ITS) provides computer, network, telephone, and video facilities and support for Colby faculty, staff, and students. A host of information and advice on Colby’s technological resources can be found on ITS’s Web site (www.colby.edu/info.tech).

Applications
The Microsoft Office suite of applications provides the College standard word processor (MS Word) and spreadsheet (MS Excel) applications. Colby’s Microsoft Campus Agreement provides a license for this software and all upgrades to every student, staff, and faculty member. Graduating students are provided with a printed license enabling them to take their installed software with them for continued use.

Computers
Apple Macintosh and Dell Windows computers are the standard microcomputers provided to faculty and staff and to equip labs. Student clusters provide about 46 Macs and 45 Windows 2000 computers in the Lovejoy Cluster (Lovejoy 400), Miller Library 16, the Computer Classroom of Olin 323, and the Davis Education Foundation Computer Classroom in Miller Library.

Connection
Each student living on campus is provided with his or her own Ethernet data communications access port in his or her residence hall room. ITS, through its Student Computer Services (SCS), provides all the support needed to connect a Mac or Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000 computer to the network, as well as assistance in standard package software installation and use.

E-mail
An electronic mail account is automatically set up for each entering student. Procedures for establishing passwords to activate accounts are posted on the ITS Web site.

Help
Assistance with connection to the network or with use of a personal Windows or Mac computer can be obtained from Student Computer Services (ext. 4224, scshelp@colby.edu). ITS’s Web site (www.colby.edu/info.tech) also contains information, FAQ’s, and how-to’s on e-mail and Web use, virus prevention, software instillation, and other technological issues at Colby.

Media Services
Media Services (Miller Library, ground floor) loans audiovisual equipment such as slide and film projectors, screens, tape recorders, and video cameras to students, faculty, and staff. The Media Services staff also helps students, faculty, and staff in the production of graphics and other AV material for curriculum and research projects. Media Services provides classroom technology support (computer and video projection systems, audio equipment, automation systems), maintains a collection of videotapes and film catalogues, and rents films and videos for classroom use.

Personal Web Pages
Personal Web pages are possible for all members of the Colby community. Read ITS’s Web authoring overview online (www.colby.edu/info.tech/howtos/Web_Authoring) for more information.

Policies
With computer and network availability comes the requirement for responsible action in ways the resources are used. A code of ethics for information technology and policies and procedures for electronic mail are specified in this handbook’s Policies and Procedures section. All users of the College’s information technology should become familiar with these principles.

Wireless Network
Colby’s wireless network is currently available in Cotter Union (the Spa, Fish Bowl, and Page Commons Room), the LRC-Language Resource Center (Lovejoy, fourth floor), and Miller Library.
