Student Financial Services is the office to contact with questions about financial aid, campus jobs, and student and parent loans. Information is also offered on the Student Financial Services Web site and in the “Financing a Colby Education” brochure available in the Office of Student Financial Services.

Financial Aid

Ordinarily, the College determines eligibility for financial aid in the spring prior to the academic year for which the aid is requested. Emergencies and unexpected changes in financial circumstances that affect a family’s ability to contribute to the cost of education are considered throughout the first semester. Changes that occur after January 1st are considered with the application for aid the following academic year.  In order to avoid late fees on students’ accounts, requests for review of aid eligibility should be presented well before the date on which payment is due. In general, a Colby grant is available only for course work required to obtain a Colby degree, up to eight semesters of full-time enrollment. Students who are admitted to Colby as other than first-semester freshmen, are eligible for Colby aid for the number of semesters required for graduation as determined by the College at the time of entry. For example, a student who matriculates in the second semester of the freshman year, will be considered for Colby aid for no more than seven semesters.

Student Jobs

All students, regardless of financial aid eligibility, may hold part-time campus jobs.  Students are encouraged to secure their own employment. Employment assistance and a list of campus employers are available by visiting the Student Employment Office located within the Office of Student Financial Services or visit our on-line Job Book on the Student Employment web page. More than 1,000 Colby students hold campus jobs each year. There are positions in virtually every academic and administrative department, including dining services, physical plant, and the library. There is no off-campus work-study.

Pay rates range depending on the type of job and the level of knowledge and responsibility required. Students are paid every other week. Time slips are completed on the Web by the student with time worked confirmed by the supervisor prior to submission to the payroll office. Paychecks may be picked up at the payroll office a week later or students my elect to designate a direct deposited to their bank account.  Students are expected to follow our campus guideline and work no more than 12 hours per week. Students with special circumstances who feel that they need to work more than the amount of work more should contact Student Financial Services.  Financial aid recipients may earn more than the amount of work in their aid packages but are encouraged to discuss their need for additional earnings with a member of the Student Financial Services staff before exceeding the packaged amount.

There also are a variety of research assistant and administrative positions available during the summer, and housing is available during the term of employment. The Office of Human Resources coordinates summer employment and the Office of Special Programs Coordinates summer housing.
