Colby offers students many opportunities to study in a foreign country, either on one of Colby's own programs, in programs sponsored by a consortium of which Colby is a member, or on an approved non-Colby program.

Approved non-Colby programs are billed by the host institution, not by Colby. Payments are made by the family directly to the host institution. An Off-Campus Study Fee of $1000  per semester will be charged by Colby.*  Students receiving financial aid should apply for financial aid from Colby for all programs approved by the College. Since Colby does not bill for standard semester charges, families cannot utilize the TuitionPay Payment Plan for payment of the semester away charges. If the student will be enrolled at Colby or on a Colby-billed program for one semester, TuitionPay can be used for that period only (up to a 5 month payment plan).

Once accepted to an off-campus study program, students must complete a leave of absence form with the Dean of Students Office to affirm their plans and to ensure their student account is appropriately billed.

*The Dartmouth University dual degree program is not currently assessed the $1000 Off-Campus Study Fee.

Financial Aid Students

Financial aid is available for students to study at either an approved Colby or approved non-Colby program for either the fall or the spring semester. Information and application details are available from the Office of Off-Campus Study. It is necessary for us to know the costs of programs (not billed by Colby) in writing before an aid award can be determined. The Study Away Budget Statement and Agreement is needed in addition to the standard aid application documents for any program not billed by Colby.  It is important for families to understand that if a program is less expensive than a semester at Colby, financial aid will be reduced. For higher-cost progams, the "aid budget" will be capped at Colby's costs for the purposes of determining grant eligibility. The Off-Campus Study Fee of $1000 charged by Colby for each approved semester is considered part of the budget when determining financial aid.

Key Points to consider:

  • Be sure to plan for vacation expenses. Financial aid is only available to assist with direct educational costs incurred while classes are in session.
  • Expected term-time earnings may be replaced by summer earnings or increased loan eligibility to the extent federal regulations permit.
  • Financial aid from Colby is paid to the student or parent (student's permission required) in early September (for study away fall semester) and in early February (for study away spring semester). Aid funds will only be disbursed when the aid funds are final. It is up to the student to make payment to the host institution in accordance with their due date or discuss plans directly with the host institution.
  • It is the responsibility of the student to tell Student Financial Services of any aid (grants, scholarships, awards) from a non-Colby source including assistance from the study away program.
  • It is the responsibility of the student to notify Student Financial Services if the student withdraws from the program at any point during the term. Keep in mind that aid from Colby is available for no more than eight semesters assuming enrollment at Colby began as a first semester freshman.
