Enviro Co, formally the Colby Environmental Coalition, is a student-run, political organization dedicated to promoting environmental initiatives, raising awareness among students on campus, and greening the Colby lifestyle. Enviro Co seeks to educate the Colby and Waterville communities about recycling, water quality, maple sugaring, forest management, green transportation, and other environmental issues. The Enviro Co office is in the basement of Mary Low.
The Environmental Studies Club aims to create a sense of community within the Environmental Studies Program by attending environmental conferences, volunteering at events (including introducing lecturers at Colby), reaching out to prospective students through admissions, and providing a network for students to talk about internships, ES courses, sponsoring social events like club lunches and pub nights, and common experiences.
The Colby Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association operates a three-quarter-acre organic garden on Runnals Hill on Colby's campus, where members grow annual and perennial crops. The group's primary functions are giving produce to Colby’s dining halls, educating the student body about sustainable agriculture, and providing members with knowledge and experience needed to grow their own food.
The Environmental Advisory Group (EAG) was formed in 2000 to advise the president and college community on issues related to the environmental stewardship of the campus and region. Students, faculty, and administrators serve on the EAG. The EAG provides leadership for initiatives to increase sustainability and environmentally safe practices in all areas of the Colby community and operations. The group works to raise awareness about ongoing environmental initiatives, to promote environmental consciousness, to show on- and off-campus audiences that Colby is actively addressing environmental concerns.
The Colby Outing Club leads outdoor trips during the academic school year including fall, Jan Plan, and spring breaks. The COC maintains outdoor gear and make it available to members, provides weekly office hours at the COC office for gear rental and other business, offers outdoor-related volunteer opportunities, and maintains the COC cabin, renting it out to COC members and non-members in the Colby community.
The Colby Mountaineering Club brings together students dedicated to rock, ice, and alpine climbing. The CMC maintains the indoor climbing wall, open to students, faculty, and staff. Members lead outdoor rock and ice climbing trips and provide leader training. The climbing wall and all CMC equipment and resources are available to members upon completion of the free introductory climbing seminar. The CMC climbing wall and office are located in the field house.
