The Associate/Assistant Director of Campus Life for Outdoor Education is responsible for the overall safety, development, and administration of Colby’s outdoor programs. The Associate/Assistant Director creates and presents Colby’s outdoor experiences for all students collaborating specifically with the residential system.The Associate/Assistant Director supervises the First-Year Orientation component of COOT2 (Colby Outdoor Orientation Trips) and mentor program, day-to-day operations of the Colby Outing Club and oversees safety management of student clubs. The Associate/Assistant Director develops plans, policies, and procedures in conjunction with the Director, the Vice President for Administration, and the Vice President for Student Affairs assuring compliance with College safety policies. The Associate/Assistant Director will work with colleagues to develop, facilitate and implement outdoor recreation and education programs for students, faculty and staff.  

Other essential functions include, but are not limited to, working with the Assistant Dean/Director to create and implement an outdoor curriculum consistent with Colby 360 (the strategic plan for Student Affairs); managing all aspects of outdoor programming, leadership development and training; working with faculty in residence and Campus Life Staff to enhance outdoor opportunities within the residential program.The Associate/Assistant Director reports to the Assistant Dean of Students/Director of Campus Life.The level of position will depend on qualifications and experience. The Associate/Assistant Director is also a member of the Student Affairs staff and will play an important role in the ongoing development and implementation of the strategic plan for student life. 

Qualifications include: Bachelor’s Degree is required; Master’s Degree in related field preferred; EMT basic and WFR certification at minimum required; three years experience in outdoor recreation, education, or comparable field required; experience and/or certification in a broad range of outdoor activities (including, but not limited to, canoeing; kayaking; camping; whitewater rafting; sailing; hiking/backpacking; mountain biking; cross-country skiing/snowshoeing) preferred; expertise in risk management strategies and implementation required; excellent relationship management skills and written and oral communication skills required; valid driver’s license and ability to obtain institutional, non-rated insurance coverage required; must be eligible to be certified by the College’s automobile insurance carrier.
