Server Administrator

The Server Administrator reports to the Director of Administrative Information Technology Services and has a technical role in the management of numerous Windows server systems, integrated with other hardware and software (especially VMWare/Netapp) in a networked environment. The Administrator will monitor the security of server operating systems, databases, applications, and network related functions and server system performance to insure high levels of reliability. In addition, will monitor and maintain network-based (Symantec Netbackup) backups and restores of Windows, UNIX, and NDMP-based storage systems; with an emphasis on data security and preservation. Other duties include: participation in the determination of new servers, services and technologies and working with vendors to obtain the best prices and support needed to maintain new computing systems; providing back-end technical support (consulting, trouble-shooting, and documentation) on the servers and storage to front-line support personnel within ITS and to the College as a whole; participation in workshops and training to improve technical skills, and to support the College's initiative in valuing differences.

A College degree and/or the equivalent in experience and certifications required. Several years of increasingly more responsible Windows server experience are highly desired. Relevant recent certifications are also desired. Professional certifications, such as Microsoft MSCE and VMWare preferred. Strong verbal and written communications skills are very important, as is a commitment to team participation and excellence in service to members of the academic community. Knowledge and experience with Windows 2000, Windows 2003, SQL Server, Microsoft Active Directory, LDAP, Kerberos, and Microsoft GPO's is required. Knowledge of Netapp storage systems is highly desired and Netapp Certification is preferred. Knowledge of VMware software and ESX Server are highly desired and VMWare Certification is preferred. Knowledge and experience with Sun Microsystems Solaris UNIX and Redhat Linux are highly desired and HP/UX knowledge is desired. Knowledge of TCP/IP networking (WINS, DNS, DHCP), Fibre-Channel, and Firewall configuration (e. g, Checkpoint firewall, ipfilter, ipfw) are desired but not required. Knowledge and experience programming in Perl, Microsoft Visual Basic, and UNIX shells are desired but not required and C, C#, Java, or .NET programming experience is desired but not required. Experience with information security standards (eg, SANS/GIAC certification) is desired.
