Recommendations: Windows and Macintosh Computer Use at Colby and Purchase Recommendations for First-Year and Continuing Students by Ray Phillips, Director of Information Technology Services. Colby is a networked campus, and faculty anticipate that students will actively use email, can handle email attachments, use the internet for research and for class activities, and in some courses, develop web pages. Information Technology Services provides workshops throughout the semesters and "How Do I" web pages; students are encouraged to explore these pages for topics that will meet their academic needs. ITS also maintains a page just for students. Another new link is to information about wireless configuration at Colby. Colby Computer Connection, August 28, 2007 is an event organized to help new students get their computers connected to the Colby network. We urge all First-Year students who need assistance connecting their computer to look for a staff member wearing a Colby Computer Connection shirt during this day. It is the individual's responsibility to unpack and set up the computer (and printer) and install virus software. See Purchase Recommendations for additional information. Basic networking instructions and other information were included in the orientation packet sent to new students. I would encourage you to read through this material before you come to the college. While Student Computer Services will provide general application support you are responsible for your own computer hardware and maintenance. The more comfortable you are with your computer and with general word processing applications, the more quickly you will be able to concentrate on coursework --and not on learning how to format a paper or use your computer.
