CMR - Frequently Asked Questions

INFO FOR STUDENTS: Colby upgraded the campus voice mail system during the summer of 2009.  Due to the ever-increasng student use of cell phones and very low student use of the campus voice mail system, resident hall extensions no longer have a default voice mailbox.  However, a limited number of  voice mailboxes are available for student rooms. Please review the Frequently Asked Questions below or return to Voice Mail Main Page.

Residence Hall Voice Mail Change FAQ's

Without voice mail, what happens to calls to my room?
Dialed room phones will continue to ring until answered or until the caller hangs up.  Callers trying to reach a room extension that is busy will hear ringing and a call waiting tone will be transmitted to the room phone.  Note: Any standard answering machine will work on your room phone.  Follow your manufacturer's installation instructions.

Can I still leave messages on other campus extensions from my room phone?
If the extension you dial (i.e. faculty office) has a voice mailbox, your unanswered call will reach voice mail regardless of where you originate the call.

Does this change impact my room phone in any other way?
No, all standard extension features (4 digit dialing, call forwarding, etc.) are still in place.  The only change is the elimination of voice mail replaced by call waiting.

Will campus emergency notifications come to my room phone?
All students receive campus emergency notification emails.  In order to receive the recorded notification on your room and/or your cell phone, you must enter those numbers in your personal list within the Connect-Ed Emergency Notification System.

Once entered, the system will ring your room and assuming you answer, you will hear the pre-recorded emergency notification. If the ringing phone is not answered and you do not have a personal answering machine or voice mailbox, no message of the notification can be left.

How come some student rooms I call still have a voice mailbox?
A limited number of voice mailboxes exist for student rooms.  Most belong to hall staff members and student leaders.

Can I get one of those limited voice mailboxes for my room line?
That is certainly possible depending on the number of requests we receive.  To request a voice mailbox, complete a Service Request.

Does the phone line in my campus club office still have a voice mailbox?
Yes, club office lines are considered administrative so are part of the new voice mail system.  You can access the club's voice mailbox from the office or any campus extension (including the one in your room) by dialing x4100, entering the mailbox number and password.
