SECURITY DISCLAIMER: Please be aware that wireless networks, by nature, are insecure. It is not recommended that you send unencrypted passwords (such as through e-mail clients and Telnet sessions) or other secure information (such as credit cards) over a wireless network connection. Anyone attempting to monitor the content of another user's wireless communication is in violation of the Code of Ethics for Information at Colby College and is subject to disciplinary and/or legal action. Current Wireless Network Zones Wireless network access (802.11a and 802.11b/g) is available in many locations throughout the Colby campus, and new areas are constantly being added. Network access is available to any member of the Colby community who has an 802.11a/b/g compatible network interface. All residential (dorm) buildings*, all three campus libraries and the Cotter student union and SSW alumni center have wireless network coverage. Wireless is gradually being introduced to academic buildings throughout the campus. For a current listing of wireless zones on Campus, visit the location information section. *Residential wireless and wired networks require Network Access Control - please refer to policies below for more information. For users in need of a wireless computer, laptops are available for loan in Miller Library, Olin Science Library, and Bixler Art and Music Library at the reference desks. These laptops can be used anywhere in the library on the wireless network. Wireless Networking Policies The wireless networks on campus are open for use for any member of the campus community, but users are expected to adhere to all existing network usage policies that are in place for wired network connections as well as current wireless networking policies. Residential wireless (and wired) networks are under the control of the Network Access Control system, which requires authentication and system validation for connection. Guest access is allowed with certain restrictions. In addition to these policies, ITS reserves the right to block or ban any user who causes interference, operational problems or poses a security risk. Personal wireless access points or any other devices that broadcast a private wireless network are not permitted in the residence halls and are not supported by ITS. Students living in the residence halls wishing to use a wireless network must use the Colby Wireless network or a wired Ethernet port. |
