Here are some common questions about Colby email

Can I run my own email server?
No.  Colby does not provide the full range of services that an Internet service provider would give -- one of which would allow customers to run their own subdomains and mail servers.  If you want to run a mail server, you will have to use a commercial ISP (and their network).

In tech-speak, all DNS Mail-Exchange (MX) records for the Colby class-B subnet (137.146.0.0/16) point to Colby's email server.  No other MX records pointing to other computers will be set.  Rogue mail servers (including spambots) will be removed from Colby's network.

Can my email be permanently forwarded elsewhere?
Sorry, no.  While Gmail and other large companies provide some pretty spiffy web-based email, Colby needs to provide as secure and as reliable email service as we can for the Colby community.

If you send legitimate email from one Colby address to another, you can be (almost) certain that your email will be delivered.  If it is not delivered, then you should receive some email back telling you why it wasn't delivered, such as "too big" or "unsafe attachment."

Viruses don't count; they will fall silently into the bit bucket.  But viruses aren't legitimate email.

I use webmail and I hate your quotas!
So quit using webmail.  Try using a POP-based email client instead.  Read the webpage on "POP vs IMAP: Which is better for me?"

If you don't want to give up webmail, then start managing your saved messages.  Download old sent-mail folders to your own computer and delete them from webmail (you can do this from within webmail).  Like your mother always said, "Clean up!"
