The general rule on e-mail attachments is: executable attachments will be rejected, especially Windows executable files. The one exception to this rule is zipped files; this exception allows one a method to get legitimate files past MailScanner. Certain file types (as determined by the UNIX command /usr/bin/file) will also be rejected because of their status as executable files on certain operating systems. An executable file is a binary file designed to run on another computer as a complete program, or capable of being launched as executable code via another process, e.g. a screensaver. Even types of attachments that are allowed are always scanned for viruses by MailScanner. If the attachment contains a virus, then the e-mail is silently discarded. Fragmented messages are always rejected. A fragmented message is a message (with or without attachments) that has been split into multiple e-mails. The only e-mail client known to fragment messages is Outlook. |
