Using the Pine Email Program on Colby0

 
Accessing Pine
  • Login to Colby0 using SSH.
  • Enter the word "pine" (without the quotes) at the shell.
  • You will see a menu in the window with the cursor at the bottom of the page, requesting your login.  Enter your login.
  • You will be asked for your password.  Enter your password.
  • You will get the message that your Inbox has been opened.

To Logout

  • At the main menu, press Q (quit.)  You will be asked if you really want to quit Pine.  Enter Y for yes or N for no.
  • NOTE:  To return to the main menu from within your Inbox or another folder, press M
 
Composing a New Message
  • From the main menu, your Inbox or other folder list, press C (compose).
  • A new, blank e-mail will open.
  • Enter the address(es) of the recipient(s) in the To field.
  • Press return to move to the CC field, the Attachment field, the Subject line or the main body of the email message.  You may also navigate by using the up and down arrows on your keyboard.
  • Type your e-mail.
  • Enter Control X.
  • You'll be asked "Send message?" Press Y (yes) or just return or N (no).
  • If you select No, the message is not sent and you may make additional changes to it.  The message will be open until you send it, Postpone it or Cancel.
  • To postpone sending the mail and come back to it later, press Control O (postpone).  You will be returned to the place where you started the message and you will see "Composition postponed.  Select Compose to resume."  The next time you press C to start to compose a new message, you'll be asked if you wish to "continue the postponed cmposition", you may enter Y (yes) or N (no).  Yes will open the postponed message, or if you have more than one postponed message, a list of those message will open and you can highlight the one you want to open and press return.
  • To cancel, press Control C.  You'll be asked to confirm that you want to cancel the message by pressing C (confirm).  You may enter N (no) if you don't want to cancel the message, but return to it and finish it. 
NOTE:  While composing a message, enter Control R while your cursor is in any field above the main body of the email to get additional options, such as Bcc (Blind Carbon Copy).

Reading Mail
  • To see the list of messages in your Inbox, press I  (capital letter "i").
  • A list of messages in your Inbox will be displayed.  The oldest unread email message will be highlighted.
  • To read that message, press V (view) or just return.
  • To read another message, use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move up or down to the desired message.  When that message is highligted, press return to read that message.
  • OR from within a message, you may press N to read the next message or P to read the previous message.

 Key to Inbox Message List:

 +  The message was sent directy to you (not a copy or from a list)
 N  New (unread) message
 A  Message was answered using the Reply command
 D  Message is marked for Deletion  NOTE:  If you have answered a message and marked it for deletion, you will only see the D.

Replying to an Email Message
  • Either select the message you want to reply to from your Inbox list, or if you are reading the message, press R (reply).
  • You'll be asked if you want to include the original message.  Enter Y (yes) or N (no).
  • A repy message will open with the cursor at the start of the message body.
  • You may use the up arrow on your keyboard to move up to the CC or attachment fields, if you want to do either of those things.
  • Type your reply and send or save the mail as you would if you were sending a new message

Forwarding an Email Message
  • Either select the message you want to forward from your Inbox list, or if you are reading the message, press F (forward).
  • A copy of the message will open, with the cursor in the To field.
  • Enter the address(es) of the recipient(s).
  • Hit return to move to the CC field, the attachment field, or the main body of the message.
  • Type your message (if any) and send the mail as you would if you were sending a new message.

Deleting Mail
  • You may delete a message either while you are reading it or when it is highlighted in your inbox, by pressing D.
  • When a message has been marked for deletion, a D will be displayed beside the message in your inbox.  If you are reading messages, DEL will be displayed in the upper right corner of the Pine screen.
  • If you marked a message for deletion in error, you may "undelete" the message by highlighting it or opening it and pressing U.
  • When you quit Pine, you will be asked if you "want to expunge deleted messages from INBOX".  Enter Y for yes or N for no.  If you enter N, the messages will remain in your mailbox, but marked as Deleted.  They can be undeleted at any time until they are expunged.

Attachments

In order to attach a document to an email in Pine, the document must reside on the machine running Pine. If your file is on a PC or Mac and you run Pine with an account on a Unix machine, you'll have to transfer it before attaching it.

You may want to use Eudora or another email client to send attachements.  Or you may contact the Faculty Staff Support Center for assistance this.

Folders

You may transfer mail from your Inbox to another folder.

  • To move or save a message in a folder, either highlight the message in your inbox or from within a message, press S (save). 
  • You will see "SAVE msg #X to folder in <Mail> [sender]:  "
  • You may type in the name of an existing folder and hit return OR create a new folder by entering the name of a new folder.  If the folder doesn't exist, you will be asked if you want it to be created.  Press Y (yes) or return. 
  • Once you have hit return, you will see "Message # copied to "folder name" in <Mail...> and deleted."
  • The mail has been deleted from your Inbox and saved in the folder.

Viewing Folders

  • From the main menu, press L (folder list).
  • Highlight Mail and hit return.
  • This will display a list of folders that you can access.
  • At this point, you may also add or delete folders.

Adding Folders

In addition to creating a new folder when you save a message, you may also create a new folder here by pressing A (add).

  • You will be asked to enter the folder name.
  • Type the folder name and hit return.
  • The folder will be added and now appear in the list of folders.

Deleting Folders

WARNING:  Deleting a folder will also delete all the messages contained in it.  THIS CANNOT BE UNDONE!  


  • At your folder list, use the arrow keys, or press N (next) or P (previous) to select the folder you wish to delete.
  • When the folder is selected, press D (delete).
  • You'll be asked to confirm that you want to delete the folder.  Press Y (yes) or N (no).
