WPA/802.1x Secure Wireless Settings

for Microsoft Windows XP computers using Intel PROSet Wireless software
These instructions are written for Microsoft Windows computers with an Intel PROSet Wireless card (centrino or other) that have the Intel PROSet software utility installed (this is the default for standard Colby issued computers).  Use of the WPA/802.1x secure wireless connection requires that the computer also has a valid IP security IKE intermediate client authentication certificate installed for the user (this should be automatically installed on all domain user accounts). To obtain a certificate or for more information on Colby digital certificates, click here. ITS recommends these following instructions only in areas where the 'Colby Secure Wireless' network is available.

1.  Open the Intel PROSet wireless utility program (Start Menu -> Programs -> Intel PROSet Wireless)
2.  Make sure that ‘Colby Secure Wireless’ appears as an available network in the list of ‘found’ wireless networks: If Colby Secure Wireless doesn't appear in the list click 'refresh'.

3.  Double-click the ‘Colby Secure Wireless’ network in the list of available networks to bring up the profile creation wizard.  Select ‘Next’ to configure this profile.

4.  Wait a few moments for the profile settings to be discovered (you will receive a message that only a portion of the settings could be discovered).  Select the ‘Next’ button to continue configuring this connection.
5.  In the ‘Security Settings’ window, configure the settings as shown below:
        •    Network authentication: WPA2-Enterprise
        •    Data Encryption : AES-CCMP
        •    Authentication Type : TLS
        •    For TLS user, select 'Use a user certificate on this computer' and then press the 'Select' button.
        •    In the selection window, select the ‘Colby Authenticated Session’ certificate and press ‘OK’

6.  Select ‘Next’ to proceed to the final step

8.  Select the ‘Next’ button at the bottom of the screen, and then the ‘OK’ button to finish the configuration.
9.  The connection should automatically establish after selecting ‘OK’ to exit the configuration wizard and you should see a pop-up window displaying the status:

undefined

If the connection does not automatically establish, you can manually connect by either selecting the network from the list of available networks OR by selecting the newly created ‘Colby Secure Wireless’ profile from the Intel PROSet Wireless ‘Profiles’ menu.  Both options are shown below:
