Connecting to ‘Colby Secure Wireless’ – Microsoft Windows XP (with Windows wireless control)

NOTE : Connecting to the secure wireless network requires a Colby College digital certificate.  To obtain a certificate or for more information on Colby digital certificates, see the certificates web page. ITS recommends using the following directions only in areas where the ‘Colby Secure Wireless’ network is available.


1.  Open the Windows Control Panel (Start -> Control Panel). Select ‘Network Connections’
2.  Right-click ‘Wireless Network Connection’ - select ‘View Available Wireless Networks’
3.  In the Wireless Network Connection window, select ‘Change Advanced Settings’ from the menu on the left.

4. Select the ‘Wireless Networks’ tab. Select the ‘Add’ button to configure a new connection

5.  Starting with the ‘Association’ tab, configure the new Wireless network connection with the following values
•    Network name (SSID):  Colby Secure Wireless
•    Network Authentication : WPA2-Enterprise
•    Data Encryption : AES

NOTE: If WPA2-Enterprise is not an option you will need to download a windows update to fix this problem. The update can be found at here.

6.  Select ‘OK’ to save the Wireless network connection.
7.  ‘Colby Secure Wireless’ should now be in the ‘Preferred networks’ list  under your Wireless Network Connection properties window, as shown below.  Select ‘OK’ to close this window.

8.  Your computer should automatically initiate a connection to Colby Secure Wireless if it is available.  If this does not happen, select ‘Colby Secure Wireless’ from the Wireless Network connections screen (if it is not still up, it can be accessed via Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Wireless Network Connection).  Double-click the network to connect to it

9.  When connecting to Colby Secure Wireless for the first time, you will receive the following popup window on your Windows task bar.

10.  You should now be connected to the ‘Colby Secure Wireless’ network.  To verify the status of the connection, return to the ‘Network Connections’ window (via the Windows control panel) and double-click the ‘Wireless Network Connection’ icon to view the current status of the connection.   It should show a status of ‘Connected’ and appear as in the following window:
