Scanning for Spyware

The Faculty and Staff Support Center recommends that users periodically scan their computers for spyware (monthly if not weekly). We recommend using both Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware, as each scans for different occurrances. If the applications are not already installed on your computer, follow these installation directions.

Spybot Search & Destroy

Configuring and Running a Scan - These steps should be followed everytime a scan is run

1. Launch the application from the Start->Programs menu
2. On the left-hand pane, click Update

3. On the right-hand pane, click Search for Updates
4. All available updates will display in the list. Click each checkbox to select it.
5. Choose a server location to download from - e.g. See-Cure #2 (Europe)
6. Click Download Updates
7. • When downloads are complete, green checkmarks will be displayed

7. On the left-hand pane, click Immunize
8. A warning message, similar to the one below, will appear. Click OK

9. On the right-hand pane, click Immunize

10. On the left-hand pane, click Search & Destroy
11. On the right-hand pane, click Check for problems. A progress bar will appear across the bottom.

12. When the scan completes, all potential problems will display in the list
13. On the right-hand pane, click Fix selected problems
14. Click Yes to remove the entries
15. When completed a confirmation window will display. Click OK.

Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE

Configuring and Running a Scan - These steps should be followed everytime a scan is run

1. Launch the application from the Start-> Programs menu
2. An update window will open. Click OK
3. At the Performing WebUpdate window, click Connect

4. Click OK to download and install the new updates
5. Click Finish

6. Ad-Aware SE will open. Click Start

7. Select Perform full system scan
8. Click Next

9. When the scan is complete, click Next

10. On the Scan Summary tab, right click in the first checkbox and choose Select All Objects
11. Click Next

12. Click OK to remove all found objects
