Connecting to ‘Colby Secure Wireless’ in Windows Vista

NOTE : Connecting to the secure wireless network requires a Colby College digital certificate.  To obtain a certificate or for more information on Colby digital certificates, click here.
It is recommended that this procedure is carried out only in areas where the ‘Colby Secure Wireless’ network is available.

1.    Click on the network icon in the Windows system tray and select ‘Connect to a Network’

Alternatively, open the ‘Connect to a Network’ either through the Windows start menu or the Control Panel.

2. When the 'Connect to a network' screen appears select 'Colby Secure Wireless' click 'Connect' and then select ‘Enter/select additional log on information’ to proceed.

3. Enter your Colby username and password in the appropriate spaces. In the ‘Logon domain’ space, type COLBY (in capital letters). Click ‘OK’ when finished.  NOTE: Do not check ‘Save this user name and password.’

4. You may receive a message prompting you to validate the Colby CA root certificate:

Click ‘OK’ to proceed.
5.  You should now be connected to the Colby Secure Wireless network:

It is recommended that you select ‘Save this network’ and ‘Start this connection automatically’ before closing the dialog box.

6.  Network connection status can be checked at any time by clicking the Network icon. in the Windows system tray and selecting ‘Network and Sharing Center.’  Alternatively, the Network and Sharing Center can be accessed through the Windows start menu or the Control Panel.

From the Network and Sharing Center, select ‘Manage Wireless Networks’ (listed on the left-hand side) to see your stored wireless network profiles, which should now include ‘Colby Secure Wireless.’

Windows will connect to the wireless networks listed here in the order they appear in this list.

It is recommended that Colby users move ‘Colby Secure Wireless’ to the top of the list by clicking it and then selecting ‘Move up’ until it is at the top of the list.
