Announcing Colby's President-Elect

To the Colby Community,

We are very pleased to announce that the Board of Trustees has unanimously selected David A. Greene to become Colby's 20th president.

A native of Worcester, Mass., David is currently Executive Vice President of the University of Chicago. In that role, he has a broad set of responsibilities for university planning and strategy, oversees major university initiatives, and supervises several academic and administrative units. He led the university's most recent strategic planning process, which ushered in a time of growth at Chicago that included increased resources for the academic program; capital projects across all disciplines, in student residences, and for a new library at the center of campus; and exponential advances in reputation, admissions, and fundraising. He also has steered the university's global initiatives and, with his oversight of campaign planning, drawn major support for scholarship and teaching initiatives in China, India, and Latin America. He is responsible for Chicago's commitment to developing the Hyde Park area of Chicago, for the university's recently announced partnership with the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, and for helping to create Chicago's Institute of Politics and Paulson Institute.

Prior to being named Executive Vice President, David was Chicago's Vice President for Strategic Initiatives and was Vice President of Brown University and Assistant to the President of Smith College. He was educated at Hamilton College and earned masters' and doctoral degrees at Harvard University.

David impressed the search committee and then the board with his passionate advocacy for residential liberal arts education and his ideas about the ways Colby College can step boldly into its third century. We know he will be eager to share his thinking with you and, most of all, to get to know you and hear your insights on our wonderful college.

Colby's website (colby.edu/presidentialsearch) has much more information about David, and we invite you to browse. David and his family -- his wife, Carolyn, and their three children, Madeline, Nora, and Declan -- will join us for a reception from 3 - 4:30 p.m. today in the Parker-Reed Room of the Schair-Swenson-Watson Alumni Center. Please come and meet them.

We would like to thank the faculty, student, and staff members of the Presidential Search Committee, as well as the trustee and Alumni Council members, for their hard work, thoughtfulness, and insight. Throughout the search process the committee always put the interest of the College first, and on their behalf we also thank the Colby community for their valuable input regarding those qualities that a new president must possess to lead Colby. We believe that David is the right person to move Colby ahead and that his energy, experience, vision, and deep commitment to the liberal arts will help Colby to fulfill its dreams and aspirations.
