Founded in 1946, the Lancaster Course has provided training for ophthalmologist from all over the world. The annual seven week program, offers contemporary and extensive coverage of the basic sciences and clinical sciences in Ophthalmology. Many teaching hospitals use the Lancaster course to supplement their residency training programs.

This seven week course is intended to provide contemporary and extensive coverage of the basic sciences (Weeks 1-3) and clinical sciences (Weeks 4-7) in Ophthalmology. The faculty is selected for its expertise, clarity of presentation and high quality visual aids. An expansive syllabus is provided with tuition. Feedback from the previous year's participants is closely evaluated and reflected in both faculty and syllabus changes. Both residents and practicing ophthalmologists who wish to focus on certain topics in Ophthalmology are welcome to register for individual sections. The Course is held at Colby College in Waterville, Maine during the summer months. Many of the course participants live on campus and have found the experience to be both convenient and enjoyable. This has proven to be a congenial atmosphere for faculty, students and staff alike. Day by day descriptions of lecture topics can be supplied to interested individuals upon request to our Maine office.

For over fifty years, the Lancaster Course in Ophthalmology has served residency programs and many individual physicians, providing an educational program in the basic sciences relating to ophthalmology. From its beginning in 1946, the Course has maintained a flexible curriculum to incorporate contemporary philosophies and practices, utilizing the skills and expertise of outstanding teachers from the various eye centers, and has consistently maintained high standards of excellence in teaching.

Registrants in this Course also benefit from the networking and friendships made with faculty members and classmates during the summer program. The Lancaster Course is truly an exceptional experience that encompasses much more than the exposure to didactic teaching.

Comprehensive lecture notes are distributed to registrants during the Course. It is important for registrants to provide a microscope for use in the pathology sections.

Special Events

A "Down East Clam/Lobster Bake" will be served to registrants of the Lancaster Course by the pond on Colby campus. In the final week of the Course, registrants will receive certificates at the annual awards dinner, also the occasion for a special presentation made for outstanding service to the Course. For both events, each registrant and a guest will receive free tickets. An illustrated talk on the history of the Course is presented each summer by the Course historian.
