The Office of Campus Life is excited to be a part of your students experience and to assist your student in making their Colby College experience their own enriching and enjoyable journey. It is our belief in experiential education and student empowerment that drives our work and our approach. We believe that your students are capable of great things and we work to encourage, coach, and support their ideas, failures (a critical part of and not an opposition to success) and successes.
Our strategic goals are to cultivate experiential learning opportunities, foster an inclusive, fun and vibrant community, develop leaders, and promote positive citizenship within the Colby community and beyond. We work toward these goals through four functional areas: Residential Living and Learning, Campus Engagement (programming and student organizations), Leadership Development, and Outdoor Education.
Some of the advice that we frequently offer students is below. As you will see this advice and our approach is motivated by encouraging students to make this experience their own, to try new things, to reflect on who they are and who they want to be, and to begin to build a path toward realizing their greatest potential.
Sample of Common Advice:
· Jump in to your experience, make it your own and make it great. Say “yes” more often than you say “no.” Say hello to everyone you come across and introduce yourself to those that say hello back, pause, or look like they could use a pick up. Don’t worry about what other people are thinking. Try something new. Spend time with people you care for and that care for you. Call home and stay connected with friends and family away from Colby, but live here. Have fun. Enjoy yourself and the people around you.
· College is your time to experiment, to try new things, and learn about yourself. Take the time to consider who you are and who you want to be and the space between. It isn’t always about right and wrong, it is often about knowing why you do what you do.
· Laugh, think, feel challenged, and flex your muscles every day. If you don’t then you should change your routine. As you mix it up and explore this place and yourself you will meet great successes and face inevitable challenges. Know that you are never alone. While this is your experience there are many of us here to help you along the way.
If ever there is a time when your student is looking to get involved on campus, has a concern about their living situation, is eager to explore a new idea, or is struggling to connect and feel comfortable here at Colby please encourage them to come see us. We are located on the second floor of the Cotter Student Center. We will also be reaching out to them through programs, discussions, partnerships with student leaders, and programs.
As parents, family, and fellow supporters of your student we are also here to partner with you. Please do not hesitate to be in touch with us with your concerns, comments, and questions. We are reachable at firstname.lastname@example.org and 207.859.4280. Please feel free to stop by our office if and when you are on campus. We look forward to hearing from you.
