Community Advisors

The Community Advisor (CA) is a paraprofessional staff member of the Office of Campus Life for Residential
Education and Living who is responsible for facilitating community standards. The primary goal of the
Residential Education and Living program is the development of an environment conducive to the academic
and personal growth of students living in the residence halls. CAs must challenge themselves to achieve
higher levels of awareness concerning their own identities and perceptions as well as understanding the
identities and perception of others.

CAs complement the process of formal education by establishing a positive and inclusive community, thus
enhancing the quality of life in the residence halls.  Community Advisors work with elected student leaders and Faculty/Staff Residents in facilitating an environment which contributes to the intellectual, social, spiritual, and cultural development of all Colby
students.

COOT

COOT is an outdoor-based student orientation program that is required of all First Year Colby College students. COOT trips are designed to be fun and engaging while preparing students for their transition to living and learning on campus. COOT trips provide students with the opportunity to develop meaningful social connections while engaging in an appropriate level of challenge through a wide range of experiences throughout the beautiful state of Maine.

COOT trips are led by enthusiastic Colby College students who undergo a competitive selection process. Each COOT leader must successfully complete all training requirements to be considered an outdoor orientation leader. Training components include, but are not limited to:

  • Wilderness First Aid and CPR
  • Leave No Trace Wilderness Ethics
  • Map and Compass
  • Adventure Leadership and Facilitation Skills
  • Accepted Field Practices and Risk Management Techniques

Club Involvement

The Office of Campus Life works with approximately 100 student-led clubs and organizations focused on athletic, spiritual, recreational, and cultural subjects.  All students are welcome and encouraged to become a member of an organization.  Within each organization there are many leadership opportunities ranging from leading the group to planning and executing events!

Sports Teams
More than 600 men and women, more than one third of the student body, participate in one or more of 32 intercollegiate varsity sports, and a greater number play in the intramural I-Play program and on club teams. There are 16 varsity teams for women, 15 for men, and one co-ed team, and they include baseball, basketball, crew, cross-country, field hockey, football, golf, ice hockey, lacrosse, squash, nordic and alpine skiing, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball.  With all of these sports students have the opportunity to display leadership skills both on and off the field!
