Student Conduct and Discipline
College is a time when students explore who they are and who they want to be, a time when they are encouraged to stretch their boundaries and challenge themselves. At times in this process, students also make mistakes and employ poor decision making. We understand that and also recognize the importance responsibility and accountability play in a student’s overall growth as a person and a member of the community. Through the Student Conduct and Discipline process, students are encouraged to reflect on the choices they have made and how these choices affect their lives and the community.
Should your son/daughter be accused of violating the Code of Student Conduct, Dean Paul Johnston will establish a time to meet one-on-one to investigate the allegations and determine the course of action going forward. If there is no merit to the allegations, the case may be dismissed during the initial meeting. On the other hand, if there is no dispute of facts, it may be that the matter can be resolved through an Administrative Hearing with sanctions being applied during that session. More complicated cases, and those where disputes exist, will be referred to the Student Conduct Board for adjudication. In all cases, the approach will be conducted in a fair and timely manner affording students access to campus resources and assistance as appropriate.

Advising Dean Program
Colby is a caring community where support is both readily and easily accessible.
The Advising Dean program ensures that all students and their parents have a point of contact for advice and counsel regarding their lives as students at Colby. A complement to our excellent academic advising, the advising dean program serves to guide students through the administrative side of the College -- aspects of college life not necessarily related to academics. This may include guidance and counsel around personal issues, assistance making the transition to the college environment and campus culture, navigating college policy, identifying resources for support and having someone to turn to when experiencing new challenges. In short, we are a great place to start if a student has a question about any aspect of their Colby experience.
Students are assigned one of the six Advising Deans in the Dean of Students office from whom they may seek information, administrative assistance, and personal support concerning their lives as students at Colby. The advising deans are:

· Tashia Bradley, Associate Dean of Students/Director of the Pugh Center
· Paul Johnston, Senior Associate Dean of Students
· Sue McDougal, Associate Dean of Students for International Students

· Jed Wartman, Associate Dean of Students/Director of Campus Life
You can find out who your student’s advising dean is by calling the Dean of Students Office or by checking the Colby directory (under your student’s name). To learn more about our individual background and role at Colby, check out the staff bio section on the Student Affairs website. The advising deans have already reached out to their advisees earlier this summer via an e-mail introduction. We will again be reaching out to students during the orientation program – advising deans will be meeting with small groups of students for lunch and breakfast throughout the orientation week.
We encourage your engagement with your student's Colby experience. The Advising Deans are available to speak with parents and families about matters of process or policy, or to provide counsel on how and where to direct your student for particular kinds of support. In our role, we hope to provide opportunities for students to learn and practice important life skills such as self-governance, independence, personal accountability, civic responsibility, and respect for themselves and others. As the Coordinator of Support Services I review requests for academic accommodations and supporting educational-psychological test reports. I encourage students with known or suspected learning differences to contact me to discuss resources and accommodations. I encourage students to do this early.
At the college level, it is imperative that all students develop their own voice as a self advocate and take ownership of their learning styles and overall academic experience. As coordinator of Support services, I will provide support and guidance and help students to access the resources they need to be successful.
A couple of thoughts for the first year student and parents:
· I would strongly urge students who have had accommodations in high school to utilize the resources for support as soon as they arrive. Often, students make the decision to not utilized accommodations in college. My experience has shown this to be problematic for many students.
· Communication is important in this process and I encourage parents and guardians to remind your student to be actively engaged in seeking resources and communicating with advisors and instructors about his or her accommodations.
· We advise students that asking for help is a sign of strength. Please encourage your son or daughter to seek help early, and as often as needed.
· Parents and guardians play an important role in helping students gain independence and self-determination, skills which will help them thrive at college and beyond.
