Grade Point Average
Each letter grade has a numerical equivalent, called quality points, used in the computation of grade point averages (GPAs):
  • A+=4.3
  • A=4.0
  • A-=3.7
  • B+=3.3
  • B=3.0
  • B-=2.7
  • C+=2.3
  • C=2.0
  • C-=1.7
  • D+=1.3
  • D=1.0
  • D-=0.7
  • F=0.0.

An A (4.0) in a 3-credit course, then, earns 12 grade points (4.0 quality points x 3 credits=12 grade points). Overall GPA is determined simply by dividing total grade points by the number of credits earned in conventionally graded classes.

GPA is computed only from courses taken at Colby or those taught by Colby professors on Colby programs, as well as those taught by Bates or Bowdoin professors on CBB programs. Credits from transferred courses are applied only to the minimum graduation requirements. In cases of low academic standing, including academic probation and dismissal, the Committee on Academic Standing makes all final decisions.
