Appendix VIII: Fines, Violations, and Probable Sanctions

This list does not include all fines and violations possible.

Event Violations

Excessive messes associated with the abuse of alcohol Cost of cleanup plus $50 fine and community service, or $50 fine to the hall
Keg without signed party/event form Housing probation for first violation, referral to Judicial Board for subsequent violations. Loss of keg, no refunds
Open container; entering/exiting an event with alcohol or possessing alcohol not provided by the host A fine of $100 will be issued to students who are responsible for one of the following offenses:
  • Possession of an open container (as defined by Maine State Liquor Law)
  • Entering/Exiting an event with alcohol not provided by the host

Policy violation by guests

Hosts assume responsibility
Violation of party/event forms Housing probation for first violation, referral to Judicial Board for subsequent violations.
Underage possession or possession in public spaces indoors (except as noted under "open container") $100 fine

Swimming in Johnson Pond$1,000 fine
Vandalism, theft, or damageFull restitution, plus a fine equal to 25 percent of the value of that which was stolen, damaged, or vandalized, plus possible letter of apology and suspension or expulsion if exceedingly serious
 
Residence Hall Violations

Community violations First violation: warning
Second violation: two-week party moratorium
Third violation: six-week party moratorium
Damage to room beyond normal "wear and tear" Cost to repair to original condition plus a 25 percent fine
Duplicating College master keys Immediate suspension or expulsion
Extra cleaning after check-out $50 fine per occupant
Keeping a pet in a residence hall $50 initial fine, additional $50 fine for each week the pet is in the residence hall
Lost key after Commencement $100 per key
Lost key before Commencement $50 per key
Noise violations in the residence halls Warning for first violation, housing probation and disciplinary warning the adjudication by the Judicial Board for subsequent violations
Occupation of student room before designated opening day without permission $100 fine per day
Painting or altering of condition of room Charges to restore room to its original condition, plus a 25 percent fine
Possession of prohibited items in the residence halls; ceiling fans, waterbeds, motorcycles and mopeds, power tools, tapestries, natural trees and branches, etc. $50 fine
Propped residence hall front door $1 per student living in dorm per instance
Refrigerator larger than 4.5 cubic feet in residence hall room $25 fine and the immediate removal of the appliance
Removing furniture from its designated location $100 fine
Smoking in non-designated areas within dorms In Dorm Offense:
First offense: $150 fine for smoking of any kind
Second offense: Housing probation
Third offense: Removal from College housing
Smoking in non-designated areas outside First offense: a written notice
Second offense: a written citation and a $50 fine
Third offense: housing probation
Fourth offense: referral to Judicial Board
Staying beyond designated check-out date and time $100 per day
Tampering with lock, automatic door-closure mechanisms, or ColbyCard Minimum $300 fine
Unauthorized room changes or failure to move out of a hall room at the designated time $200 fine per occupant involved in the violation
Unauthorized tapping into cable TV $500 fine
 
Safety Violations

probable College sanction
Falsely activating a fire alarm $500 fine and disciplinary action; if suspect unknown, $300 fine to dorm
Operation of a motor vehicle on areas other than roadways $100 fine and cost to repair damaged grounds
Possession of firecrackers or other explosive devices Minimum $100 fine
Tampering with elevators $100 fine
Tampering with existing electrical switches or electrical fixtures Minimum $50 fine
Tampering with exterior call boxes $750 fine
Tampering with and/or activating fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, automatic door closures, or other safety devices $300 fine
Torchiere-style halogen floor lamps, candles, oil lamps, etc. $150 fine

Note: There is no refund of room, board, or tuition for students who are suspended or expelled or who withdraw from the College pending, or as a result of, disciplinary action.
