Student Government Association
In order to represent the varied needs of students, Colby’s student government is a multi-tiered structure that operates on a campus-wide level (the Student Government Association and the Presidents’ Council), within each residential hall (the hall councils), and within each class (class councils). Students also serve on the Judicial Board, which makes recommendations on most disciplinary decisions, and on a number of College committees in which they work together with faculty, staff, and occasionally, trustees.

The Student Government Association (SGA) is the executive branch of Colby’s all-campus government. Working closely with the all-campus Presidents’ Council, SGA serves as the funding and supervisory board for the many clubs and student organizations of the College, making allocations from its budget of more than $228,000 for this purpose. In addition, SGA serves as a communication link among students, faculty, administrators, and trustees. The following positions are elected annually.

  • The president presides over meetings of the Presidents’ Council and serves as a student representative to the Board of Trustees.
  • The vice president serves as a student representative to the Board of Trustees, is responsible for elections and committee appointments, and assumes office if the president is unable to carry out the term.
  • The treasurer prepares an annual budget for approval by the Presidents’ Council and handles all day-to-day financial matters for clubs and SGA.

The students elected to serve in these positions are open to ideas and suggestions from all students. For a more complete description of the Student Government Association and its functions see Appendix V: Constitution of the Colby Student Government Association.
