Counseling Services

Eric Johnson is the Director of Counseling Services.   Dr. Johnson is a licensed psychologist and oversees the Counseling Services office at Colby.  He and his staff are dedicated to meeting the array of mental health needs of students through providing direct counseling services for students, as well as consultation, education, and prevention programming for the entire campus community.  Dr. Johnson is passionate about supporting students' emotional and intellectual growth and development and comes to Colby with over 18 years of experience in college counseling.  Prior to Colby, he worked 15 years at Ohio Wesleyan University as the Assistant Director and Counselor/Prevention Programmer.  During his tenure at Ohio Wesleyan, he served on the Presidents' Commission on Racial and Cultural Diversity and as the adviser to the Spectrum Resource Center for LGBTIQ students.  Dr. Johnson is a generalist in his clinical practice with special interests and expertise in the areas of anxiety and stress management, working with diverse student populations, performance related issues effecting athletes and performance majors.  Dr. Johnson earned his Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from Ohio University and his Master's and Doctoral Degrees in Clinical Psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in Chicago.  He completed his Pre-Doctoral Internship at the University of New Hampsires's Counseling Center.  Away from the office, he enjoys spending time with this family, running, cycling and playing hockey.  Dr. Johnson's email address is




Dr. Turkoglu received her PhD in Clinical Psychology at the University of Vermont. After graduate school, she completed a Professional Psychology Internship at the Togus Veterans' Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Augusta, ME, followed by postdoctoral training in Health Psychology at the Connecticut VA Medical Center in West Haven, CT and Yale University's School of Medicine. She is licensed as a psychologist in Maine. Dr. Turkoglu who goes by Dr. Turk for convenience, identifies primarily as a scientist-practitioner. She utilizes scientific knowledge to inform her practice and makes sure her practice evolves along with advances in the scientific study of clinical psychology. Dr. Turk works mainly from a cognitive behavioral framework of therapy for a wide range of psychological issues. She works mostly with thoughts and behaviors, and believes that our emotions can be manipulated only through manipulation of our interpretations of ourselves, others and the world, as well as changes in our behaviors. Her main goal in therapy is increasing functionality that is in line with one's values and aspirations. Dr. Turkoglu's specialty is clinical health psychology; she has extensive experience in working on health related behaviors (e.g. sleep, smoking cessation, pain management, motivation, etc.) She also has a strong background in providing evidence-based treatments for anxiety (e.g. panic, trauma, phobias) and depression. While most of her time is spent in individual therapy, she also enjoys providing treatment in groups for its efficiency.

Dr. Turkoglu's first interaction with Colby was as a spouse. Her husband, Dr. Keith Peterson, has been teaching in the Philosophy Department for the past four years and has recently been hired as tenure track faculty. Jing Ye, M.A., L.C.P.C., F.O.T., is a Counselor in Colby Counseling Services.  Jing brings diverse cultural and clinical experiences as a native Chinese with extensive training in the U.S. in applying Eastern philosophy to Western psychotherapy.  Jing has 19 years of clinical experience working with varied populations using different therapeutic modalities.  She is especially interested in working with somatic complaints, as well as developmental related issues, e.g. adjustment issues, self-esteem, and relationship problems.  Her Tai Chi, Chi Gong, and meditation practice further enable her to work compassionately, creatively, and sensitively with many unique situations.  Since 2001, Jing has been leading a weekly mediation group on campus.  She is a member of Multicultural Affairs Committee, an adviser to Mindfulness Club and SHOC.

Jing obtained her MA in psychology and counseling from Goddard College in Vermont.  Jing is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor.  She is also a Certified Focusing-Oriented Therapist.  Jing worked at an adolescent recovery program and other mental health agencies before starting at Colby in 2000.  She enjoys reading, traveling, and foreign movies. Alissa Benziger is the Administrative Coordinator for Counseling Services. She joined the Colby community in August 2015.  Alissa coordinates the scheduling, budgeting, and daily operations for the Counseling center. She received her B.A. in Art History from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 2006 and worked in and around Boston as a receptionist for massage and acupuncture modalities. Since moving to Maine in 2012, she had been in the mental health field, working with children and teens as a Behavioral Health Professional. Paul Berkner, DO FAAP, is the Director of the Medical Center and Sports Team Physician at Colby.  Dr. Berkner has been at Colby since 2004.  Before coming to work for Colby, Dr. Berkner was in private pediatric practice in Maine and Vermont. During that time, he served as the Medical Director for the Northland Job Corps, and served as the Medical Director for several summer camps. Dr. Berkner received his Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine from New England College, and completed his residency in Pediatric at Columbia University - Morristown Memorial Hospital. He is currently certified in pediatrics with the American Board of Pediatrics, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Berkner is currently the President of the Maine Concussion Management Initiative. Lydia Bolduc Marden, NSN FNP/PMHNP.   Lydia graduated from the University of Maine with a BS in Health Education and MS in Nursing.  Certified as Women's Health NP in 1991, post masters degrees and certifications as a Family NP in 2007 and Psychiatric Mental health NP in 2012 from Husson University.  She has been with Colby in health services since 1984.  Lydia's email address is


Jennifer Griffiths Riddle MSN, FNP-C is a certified Family Nurse Practitioner.  She received her Bachelors of Science in Nursing at the University of Maine at Orono, and her Master of Science in Nursing and FNP certification at Barry University in North Miami Beach, Florida.  Jennifer comes to Colby with 14 years of primary care experience in a private pediatric practice.  Jennifer has been employed by Colby College since 2011. Holly Gerlaugh Weidner FNP, PA-C, is certified as both a Family Nurse Practitioner and a Physician Assistant.  Holly joined Colby College in 2011 after 30 years in family medicine and as a faculty member to family medicine residents at the Maine Dartsmouth Family Medicine Residency in Augusta.  Her international experience has included providing medical care in an outpost station in Esteli, Nicaragua, supervising medical students in Jamaica,  setting up cervical cancer surveillance programs in Puerto Cabeza, Nicaragua and teaching nurse practitioner students in the Dominican Republic.  She received her BA in Biology at Cornell University in 1975 and her MS in Nursing at Pace University, then joined an internal medicine team at the Anthony Jordon Health Center in Rochester, NY in 1977. Christina "Tina" Steeves, is the Administrative Secretary for the Colby Health Center.  Tina served Health Services as a Certified Athletic Trainer for 11 years prior to making a change into the office in August of 2009.  She earned her Bachelor's Degree in Health and Fitness as well as a Master's Degree in Kinesiology from the University of Maine at Orono.  She is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association, Maine Athletic Trainers Association, and is a CPR and First Aid Instructor through the American Red Cross.  Tina's email address is  


Meredith Tardiff is the receptionist for the Colby Health Center.  She graduated from Plus-Gray's School of Business.  Working first in office settings, she transitioned to medical practices. Coordinator for Drug and Alcohol Programs


 Katie Sawyer, LCPC, LADC, CCS is credentialed as a licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor, and a Certified Clinical Supervisor.  She graduated from Washington and Lee University with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology, and Lesley University with a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology.  Katie serves the students of Colby College as an alcohol and drug counselor and coordinator of health promotion. She co-advises SHOC, the student-led health peer educators, and co-chairs the Alcohol Education, Awareness and Training Advisory Group.  Her clinical experience includes counseling adults and adolescents in outpatient addiction treatment and specialized work in medication-assisted treatment for opiate addiction.  She spearheaded compliance and accreditation efforts relative to the standards of the State of Maine, Federal law, the Joint commission, and the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care.  Katie's previous professional pursuits included stints in retail car rentals, pharmaceutical sales, and administrative assisting.  She enjoys live music, good novels, and time with friends and family.  Katie's email address is

Laura P

Laura Patterson, RN: Staff Nurse.  Laura graduated from the University of Texas School of Nursing, Austin in 1982.  She specialized in Obstetrics and Prenatal Health prior to coming to Colby in 2006.  Laura is certified as a Holistic Nurse (HNB-BC) and Clinical Aromatherapy Practitioner (CCAP).


Robin Shafer, RN, is a staff nurse at the Colby Health Center.  Robin attended Pitzer College in Claremont, California, majoring in English and Physiological Psychology, and later attended the University of Maine, earning her Associate Degree in Science. She was employed at Maine General Medical Center, first as a counselor on the Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health Units for 9 years, and then as an RN for another 16 years. As a nurse, she has worked in several departments, including Occupational Medicine, Employee Health, Med Surg, ER, Behavioral Health, Detox, and Neuro/Rehabilitation. Judy Whyte, RN:Head Nurse.  Judy joins the Colby Health Center with 25 years of nursing experience.  As a 1991 graduate of UMass-Amberst she has spent most of her clinical career in Emergency Departments, Occupational Health and Employee Health Departments. She has also been employed as a Wellness Nurse for Hannaford, the State of Maine, and MaineGeneral Health.  Judy spends her summers as a camp nurse in Winslow, and is currently living in West Gardiner, Maine raising a blended family.


Donna Jurdak-Roy, MT (ASCP), is a certified Medical Technologist at the Colby Health Center. She received her Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from the University of Maine and received her clinical training at Maine Medical in Portland. She is board certified as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. She previously was the Hematology Supervisor at St Joseph's Hospital in Bangor, Maine and later worked several years at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Waterville, Maine. Athletic Trainers

Timothy "Westy" Weston, ATC,  is a Certified Athletic Trainer and Head Athletic Trainer for the Colby Health Center. He is a Licensed Athletic Trainer in the State of Maine. Westy received his Bachelor of Science and his Masters in Education Leadership from the University of Maine. Before coming to work for Colby, he worked for the New York Yankees minor league baseball league. He is currently the District One Secretary for the National Athletic Trainers Association. Christopher O'Toole, ATC, is a Certified Athletic Trainer, and is a Licensed Athletic Trainer in the State of Maine. Chris received his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education with a concentration in Athletic Training from Kean University. Chris also holds a degree as a Certified Ergonomics Specialist. Before coming to work for Colby, Chris worked in a number of sports medicine, physical therapy clinics. He has also worked at several sports clinics, the most notable of which is the Professional Development Association Summer Soccer Camp. He also worked as an Athletic Trainer at Southern Maine High School. Paul Rucci

Paul M. Rucci, MS, ATC, NASM-PES  is the Assistant Athletic Trainer at Colby College.  Paul is from Millinocket, Maine and received his Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from the University of Maine at Presque Isle.  While completing his undergraduate degree, Paul had been  an intern at Colby College in the spring of 2011.  Paul went on to earn a Master's Degree in Athletic Training from California university of Pennsylvania in 2012.  He worked as the athletic trainer at Fort Kent Community High School before coming to Colby.  While at Fort Kent Community HS, he oversaw all athletic training responsibilities for the student athletes.

Emily VEmily Vartabedian, MS, ATC is an Assistant Athletic Trainer for Colby College. Emily is from Newburyport, Massachusetts and received her Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2012. While she was there she worked with the Division I men’s football team for 2 years. Emily then went on to earn a Master’s of Science in Athletic Training from Bridgewater State University in 2015. While in graduate school Emily had the opportunity to work with the Providence College men’s basketball team for the 2013-2014 season, Medfield High School fall sports teams and Tufts University in the Spring of 2015. Emily currently works with the men and women’s rugby teams at Colby College.
