First Class

The First Class program (September 2, 9:30 am - 11:30 am & 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm) gives all first-year students a meaningful experience in a college classroom and introduces them to academic life at Colby. First Class features two sessions. In the morning session students take part in an actual class session taught by faculty members. In the afternoon session faculty will introduce first-year students to academic expectations and the liberal arts tradition. Students will be assigned to one of the 25 First Class sessions by COOT² group. Faculty members representing a variety of departments including Biology, Education, Chemistry, East Asian Studies, Government, Theater, Psychology, Computer Science, History, Anthropology, Music, and African American Studies, will design an assignment (reading, writing, or both). Students will be notified of their assignments in early August via email. Assignments will vary by class and will be relevant to the First Class discussions.
