Senior Scholars
» More about Senior ScholarsFifty years ago the Colby faculty created the Senior Scholars Program to give students an opportunity to devote significant time to a major project as an alternative to traditional course work in the senior year. Students who wish to concentrate on a single topic may be released from two courses per semester in their senior year to devote six credit hours to independent research under the guidance of a faculty tutor. Each senior scholar makes a presentation in the spring, and successful project reports become part of the Colby library's permanent collection. A senior scholars project is an intensive, independent, scholarly research project of the kind that usually takes place in graduate schools, according to one recent tutor in the program. In fact, alumni of the program say it was a leg up getting into and succeeding in graduate programs.
