 off the hill

Since 1991 all Colby students have had to fulfill a diversity requirement in order to graduate, and, at the urging of the faculty, the requirement recently was reinforced. Beginning with the Class of 2007, students must complete two courses centrally concerned with prejudice, privilege, oppression, inequality, and injustice, one course focused primarily on the United States and one international in scope. The requirement helps ensure that all students achieve one of Colby's precepts: "to learn how people different from oneself have contributed to the richness and diversity of society, how prejudice limits such personal and cultural enrichment, and how each individual can confront intolerance."
